First off, I'd like to start by saying I live in the southern U.S. in an area where one company somehow has all the rights to run internet in my city. That being said, they don't even have good internet speeds. And since they don't have to worry about competition, they jack up the prices. We pay 60 bucks a month for 3mbps down and like .5 up I think. Now this is barely enough to be able to play online games but it can be done. However, our router that I am hooked up to via ethernet, literally splits my download speed in half, which is not enough to play online games. I want to know if there is a relatively cheap (<$40 ) ethernet switch that could give me the bandwidth I need, while still keeping the router up.

Can you suggest a good switch that maybe has throttling software or something, while staying in budget?

Do you think that a normal switch would work?

If both of these are no, is there a router that can do what I need it to do?

you want to make the best out of those speeds by connecting to your router via LAN directly or going as close as possible to your wirelessAP.

the switch won't help

I already am connected to my router via ethernet, my PC doesn't use wireless. I was basically just wondering if I could stick a switch in the middle and it no slow me down like the router is.

Impossible. If the speed is slowed down by your router, you can't gain it back magically by a switch.

Clearly didn't read my comment: If you cant get good speeds when directly plugging into the router, adding another device in the middle is not going to fix it.

This.

Only way to improve speeds is getting a new, gigabit, router.

Doesn't have to be gigabit. If his internet connection isn't faster than 100Mbps, which it isn't, or he doesn't share files heavily within the household, then a 10/100 router will suffice.

If you are directly connected to your router and your speed gets cut in half by your router then swapping out your router for a better one should allow you to take full advantage of the 3D/1U that you have.

Which router are you currently using btw?

Well, I guess I fixed my own problem here, one of my dads friends sent me a whole bunch of  network stuff his company was throwing out for newer stuff, and I got a switch in there. So I hooked it up from my modem to my pc, and the router to it as well. Now I can play most games online with good pings without having to plug straight in to the modem while still letting the rest of the house surf the web or whatever they do. It worked for me, so I'm happy.
