Hello you fellow planners :) I have an extra hdd and it is not in a very good shape anymore, but i would like to use it as a secondary backup disk. It has about 60 reallocated sectors so it is not fun to start it up every time i turn on my pc.

Would it be possible to make a hardware power switch to the sata power cable so I could turn the drive off always when i dont need it. I know it would be easier to make it an external drive but internal are more handy to me :). The problem is that Sata power has so many cables, so i am not sure if a switch would be possible...

And not sure if this was the right thread, sorry.

Thanks

If you can set the drive to hotswap, sure.

...Figure it out? Just look at which cable connects to your hdd.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA Has some info on the Sata power connector pins.

You may however be better off looking at getting a new drive though as a drive that cant be on all the time is a drive I don't trust especially for backups. If you think about it you will only be putting backups on there every now and then not really enough time to detect a serious issue but let me tell you you will find the issue when you try to get that really important file off of there.

Well, i am very well aware which cable goes to the hdd but sata power has four cables in it, so which cable of THOSE four is the one to cut and make a switch so that the drive stops and has NO power at all. But... maybe i just leave this.

Yeah maybe :D The drive had been in active use for 4 years now and had no issues in normal work but only if i check S.M.A.R.T i notice the problems. And yes i would do a backup there about 6 times a year or so. Maybe this isnt worth it tho... Maybe i just put it in an external case as i have one laying.
