write protected usb... Pls HELP

so i went to a cyber cafe for a printout stored on my pendrive.

when i got back home, i plugged in the usb and tried moving some files to it, it says write protected.

i tried formatting it, but failed. Please help me. i dont mind loosing the data on it i just need to be able to use the pen drive

Check if any of the files you tried to move is set to "Read-Only". That is pretty common at least in my case so that's the first thing I check.

no... i even get the message saying the drive is write protected while formatting

Is there a mechanical switch on the usb? I remember that some old sd cards and usbs had a switch to make them protected

Nope nothing like that.

Format the drive, if it formats then good else try on another PC.

 

If not, then it is probably semi-dead and read only mode allows you to copy any data before it fails permanently. Flash drives have this as a defense mechanism when they detect they are dying.
