I'm quite a noob when talking about storage devices connectors and I'm trying to figure out the difference between SATA 3 and SATA 3.1 or are they the same!

also I want to know which SATA version does my laptop support because I want to swap the optical drive bay with an SSD (is there any advices u can give me in a process like this)

thanks a lot.

As far as I know, you can use a Caddy to use the ODD space for an HDD or SSD indipendently of the SATA revision, especially considering that SATA 3.1 and 3.2 only introduced minor features that aren't concerning to your purpose

you need to tell us your laptop model first...

But most laptop only has sata 3 on the primary sata..everything except that will be sata 2...not on all model though

also there are no sata 3.1..usb 3.1 exist though.

SATA 3.1 isn't a thing.

What laptop do you have? It's worth noting that even on SATA 2, you still get the benefits of an SSD

it is an HP note book T8S57EA#BH5

and I also didn't hear about it before but I used HWinFO64 and it showed SATA 3.1

I used a tool called HWiNFO64 and it showed SATA 3.1 , that's why I wanted to ask

SATA 3.1 and 3.2 indeed exist as SATA versions, but again, they're just minor revisions, not even mentioned 99% of the times

Yes its just a naming scheme for a revision..its still called sata 3..

Just buy a sata ssd and put it in your primary sata slot..and then put your hdd on the dvd rom hdd caddy

Upon looking it up,seems like SATA 3.1 is a thing, but it doesn't make much difference. No speed differences at least.

Not sure on the SATA revision of the port for the optical drive. I'd imagine that it will be 2 or 3. If you have an HDD already, you may be best off switching the SSD to where the HDD is, then put the HDD in the optical drive slot

There is, look it up!

Even some PSU Manufacturers advertize with "S-ATA 3.1 compatible S-ATA Connector" or something like that.

There is a Difference for the Drives and Power Connector.

There is nothing relevant for you because its up and downwards compatible.

So no worries here..

Again, irrelevant, as S-ATA2 Devices work on S-ATA 3 and vice versa.

Since you are talking about a Notebook, be aware that it might not work the way you want it to!

Because its not intended to be used that way, its possible that it can't boot from that.

And you have ot remove the Stock HDD anyway and repalce that with the SSD...

But do you always need the HDD?
If not, get an external USB3.0 Case and put the Drive in there.

Although you can use the Drive Bay as a Cold Swap Bay.

SATA 3.2 introduced major features: SATA Express and M.2 SATA were both introduced as of the 3.2 spec, along with DevSleep for lower idle power consumption.

no problem then, but I recommend you move your HDD on that drive and put a SSD on your original drive location like what the other guy said.

Exactly, not necessarily major to me, seen the numerous applications of SATA Express and the usefulness of M.2 SATA to confuse the consumers even more ? But yeah, jokes aside, I considered those as minor because they weren't really concerning this purpose... And also, compared to the SATA 2 to 3 evolution in speed

Asfor the DevSleep, that's quite neat actually
