I'd presume this would be possible. When I actually build my computer, I plan to 'heavily' customize the folders that go on the HDD (using SSD as a boot).

HDD

  • ROOT (only folders I'd think)
  • - Digital Games (GOG)
  • - Digital Games (Steam)
  • - Retail Games
  • -- Blizzard
  • --- Diablo
  • --- WarCraft
  • -- Maxis
  • --- The Sims
  • ---- 1/2 (different folders)
  • --- SimCity
  • ---- 1/2/3/4k (different folders)
  • -- MISC
  • --- (Heroes of) Might & Magic
  • - Cleaning Programs
  • - Browsers (firefox/chrome/Opera

I'd presume the programs (steam? GOG?), etc wouldn't have an issue with this, would they?

No problem at all. Steam install folder would need to be called "Digital Games (Steam)" folder instead of "Steam" when you install it. But beside that, it's all good.

(Steam purchased games doesn't allow them to be installed anywhere else beside where Steam is located).

GOG is not a software. What you install is a just a download manager.. it's optional. Its for you to be able to use multiple server at once to download your games faster and pause/resume downloads. GOG games are DRM free, and you do anything you want with them. You want to put one game in "C:\Windows\System32", and the other on a USB key. No problem.

Personally, I would just have a folder called "Games". Adding Blizzard and Maxis foldder is not useful in any way. Then again, you just run the games from the Start Screen driectly (Windows 8), or a desktop shortcut or something.

You can install Steam games in other locations then your Steam folder.
