Macbook Pro not working

Hi guys. I've received a message from a friend of mine that one of their computers at work got an error and initially I thought it might have to do something with the CPU (see pic 1 for the reason why and also because the laptop was overheating). A short while after, I've received a second and a third picture that look like the storage (HDD) is having issues. Now the laptop won't boot into OS, instead loads up the white/gray screen and the folder with a question mark. Any clues on how to fix this? I've never worked on a Mac - I tend to avoid Apple products like the plague. Thanks! :)

Could be a dead drive, but faulty memory is also possible. You'll have to open it up and switch with some known good parts.

bring it to apple and prepare to lose all the data on it depending which exact model it is since new ones dont have the port to copy the data of the device anymore and have soldered in SSD´s.

i hope he bought extended warranty because apple will fuck him over if hes not covered anymore.

Hey. I told my friend the very same thing. Dead drive or memory... Someone else opened it I believe, but they don't have a spare one. I'll call again to see. Thanks for the quick response. Will wait and see what the others say.

Will do! Yeah, that's what I was expecting as well and told them. Know that from Linus' videos. That's another reason why I don't use their products :/

This looks like an older model to me, like 2008/2009/2010. Apple doesn't service pre-2012 MacBooks anymore except for the battery.

Oef. Will keep you posted nevertheless if I get more information from them! :) Can't reach them now apparently.

what model is it exactly? certain models are prone to gpu faillure and random crashes can be a sign it's going bad.

EDIT: just looked at the photo's closely, and it's a 13"... those don't have dGPU's... oops xD

All hardware seems ok, with the exception of the boot drive or sata cable. That question mark image you see basically means that the computer is unable to find necessary files required to boot the device. Based on what you said with overheating issues, it seems like the sata cable to the drive is bad. If I recall correctly, Macbook pro's use a proprietary cable (not 100% sure on this). I'd recommend removing the hard drive and booting it from an external usb drive enclosure first to make sure it's definitely the cable and not the hard drive that died.
