ECC Memory Compatibility

I have some questions about ECC RAM:

Does the motherboard have to support ECC memory?

If the CPU doesn't support ECC memory can you put it in anyway and have it work like normal RAM?

Does a CPU that supports ECC RAM work with normal RAM?

Are there any other special things about its compatibility?

What is actually supposed to go here? Some people put their specs, others put random comments or remarks about themselves or others, and there are a few who put cryptic statements.

We can help you better if we know what motherbord and cpu you got.

Generally:

Only "high end" and server motherboards support ECC memory
NO , ECC memory will not work if the cpu das not support it.**
Yes, Cpu's that support ecc will also work whit normal memory

**Some motherboards can do some trick that will make the ram work in a normal non-ecc state so you can use it as normal memory. But than again that's a high end motherboard

It depends on if the ECC memory is buffered, unbuffered, etc and it also depends on the specific motherboard you're talking about.

I don't have anything specific, I was just curious.
