Hey, I was wondering, I wan't to setup somes camera in my car to create epic roadtrip montage

I live in Quebec, Canada so in winter, it can get preaty cold( -40c max) and since it's in my car, storage will only be made of SSD's

So my question is: What Cpu/GPU/Ram do I need if I want to be able to record from 8 camera at the same time(8 max. in average it'll be about 3-5), any recomendation like Should I get absolutly an i7 or an i5 or is an i3 enough? How much Ram do you reccomand and the integrated Graphic, are they enough? Should I Get something to make sure that with the cold there will not be any condensation in the PC?

Thanks a Lot for your help :)

What are you planning on doing? Also, I guess you'll need some form of capture card if you want to use the signals from your cameras, at least in most case you'll probably need one, I guess... :P

Make sure to tag and/or quote people so they get notified... :P:D

I don't really have a fixed budget, i want something that will give more than planty power to record 8x 1080p 60FPS recording at the same time but wouldn't cost me 80'000$. I don't have problem with waiting a couple month if it's more than I have.

My Plan was something not to big so I could fit it like in the trunk and not to much heat producing since it will be in a close environement(if it's to much heat, i will put it in the car with A/C)

I will buy USB camera and USB 3.1 to PCI adapter to be sure I have enough bandwith and since it will be all ssd, it's gonna writh fast enough

Bonus point if you find a way to put this in a Tiny form factor(I am preaty good with DIY if it doesn't Technicly fit in the case

P.S. Sorry for my bad english, it's my Second language :P

Thanks Again

which type of 8 cameras? can;t you record into the camera memory card? ytou do not need a computer. if your idea is to live stream during trip how do you plan to switch the 8 cameras and who will control video switcher when you are driving? if you are not live streaming and do not want to recordf to memory card internally you can build pc with pci card like blackmagic decklink with 8 inputs or a rack with 8 hyperdek studio mini recorders or hyperdeck studios though this will take much room

https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/hyperdeckstudiomini/techspecs/W-HYD-07

https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/hyperdeckstudio

for live streaming and switfching cameras you need to buy video switcher with 8 inputs but most switchers support few hdmi inputs so if your cameras all have only hdmi out some of them need hdmi to sdi converters

yeah what would i know about cameras or cinematography compared to you tech people.  i've only done this work for nearly 20 years, won a few awards, worked in over a dozen different countries and a few multi million dollar projects

What I was originaly thinking wasn't to do Streaming or anything with it, it's more like a Huge Harddrive to stock the footage since I often do multiple hours of roadtrip(sometimes more than 12h) so I need to plug every camera to power somehow and because of this, if I plug them in usb, I will have solved my power problem and I will be able to record for How much time I don't have any limit with the camera maxing at 64G sd cards, I can just record for how much ssd I can put in this thing so no practical limit exept space and budget(like I said I don't have 80k$ to spend)

I was thinking of the Logitech c920 USB camera since they are cheap, do 1080p(not 100% sure for the 60fps but I can give up on this one, 30fps should be enough for now) and they have also great review

BUT I would like that if at one point I have the money for it and I want to switch to 4k 60fps camera, I would want the pc to be powerfull enough if possible. Like I said, no streaming, just recording and storing the files and when I get to the hotel or anything else, just dumb every thing on somes external hdd to do the montage on my real pc

Also, I prefer Real PC since I can upgrade them easly if needed and I can easly mod a random case I got to make it fit perfectly somewhere

which ever camera you use what software are you using to record each camera? have you done test even with 2 cameras connected to same computer?

I actualy haven't taught about this but it feels like it should be possible, any suggestion? Free or Paid Software, doesn't care

what you want to do is 8 camera input to 1 computer and have 8 files of recording, 1 file for each camera?

I don't know any software that will let you do that. if you want 8 camera input to 1 computer and have 1 recording file of 8 cameras mixed there are many software. but the software will only record 1 viewpoint of 1 camera at 1 time so you need to do camera switching with the software or with external switcher.

you can open multiple instances of some software, maybe obs, to record input of each camera but each extra instance of the software will use more computer resources and 8 instances will be use a lot of resources as each instance will be an instance of a software encoder. you will need a computer with many cores and a lot of memory but with 8-core cpu and 64 or 128gb of ram i think you will still have performance problems with 8 instances running at same time.

the better way is to record internal for each camera but the logitech webcam doesnt record internal. maybe is better you find different camera.

I've watch your decklink you give the link to, their is a couple of things I don't really understant with it, like How do I get from a normal camera to this sdi Plug? do I need special camera for it? and if I use by example the decklink quad 2, do I need any Software or it's "included" in the pci card, how does it work? also, any reccomendation if I ever want to upgrade to 4k 60fps recording?

What I want to di it like you said first, 8 camera and 8 videos files at the end(one for each view angle) so Maybe I will need to get away from the normal pc thing unless I try like a Threadripper 2950x(32 cores should be enough) and 128Go of ram but this seams like a big cost and totaly not the good way of doing it

Maybe 8 mini computer using Synergy to have only one screenfor all of them but this seams like a pain in the but and a lot of power consumption(like I said, it's in a car, I can add an other battery but there is only so much energy my alternator can charge those battery

Please give me an answer to this stupid problem that I have xD I don't feel like having to change the sd card in all 8 camera each 3-6 hours, also, SD cards are Slow, Moving 96H of data( 8 cam. X 12h each.) would take me DAYS!!! even i 1080p unless I ca store them in ssd. Also I plan on doing a 2 week Roadtrip this winter so i'm preaty sure I wouldn't be able to just empty the sd cards over night and be ready to record again next morning

I don't care changing the camera, they were just an idea since I didn't taught about HOW I would record them, the only thing I need for the camera is for them not be to big since they will be tape with double-sided tape(same type as the gopro give, I can't remove them without a LOT of heat) and since they are in the windows, they need to not cover to much of My View of the road in front and behind me, Gopro size is perfect but It wouldn't bother me if it's a bit bigger.

Thanks a Lot for your help :P

k for camera if you want to use the decklink or other blackmagic device you need camera with hdmi or sdi output.  if the receiver device only has sdi input and your camera is hdmi, you need hdmi to sdi converter.

there is another option you can use, 8 atomos blade recorders which are external recorder that record video to SSD drives. they can be powered by batteries or power cable. but they require a camera with hdmi output.

https://www.atomos.com/ninja-blade

i think you will have 2 problems with this. 1st is how to power multiple devices from your car. even with inverter having many devices that need main power will be strain on the car battery. 2nd is cost. if each atomos blade cost $500 you will spend $4000.  ssd drives will add to your cost. do you realy need 8 camera angles to film your road trip? this is like quantity vs quality. why not get fewer cameras but good cameras, mix between filming video and creating timelapse. in final who wants to watch hours long road trip?  make a quality video thst people want to watch. go for quality over quantity and film good quality video or photos to tell the story of your trip.

the guy who filmed this using video and timelapse was making recording of his road trip. he did a good job. the video below is just a trailer of longer version

or this video where this guy films using gopros and mini gimbals attached to his bike and body

I will watch the 2 options you gave me and also I taught about it and Gopro Hero 6 suport up to 256Go sd card so I think I'm gonna go this way even if i'm limited to 5h of videos per camera it'a gonna be a pain in the a** to change the sd card 2-3 times per day but it should be allright and it will cost about 150 watt I think so it's gonna be easier to power from the car than orthers options, also I found somes 100mb/s 256Go Micro SD cards and I think I will just get somes sd card hub and USB 3.0 Hub to transfert all the files in a External HDD using a cheap laptop, IF i transfert 8 sd cards at the same time, it will take about 3 Hours to dump every thing on the HDD

for power consumption, if needed, I taught about installing a second batterie seperate from the car electric circuit(exept that I would plug it on the alternator to charge it) and all camera and the laptop would run on this battery exept for the main one

I think it's eather gonna be The Gopro Option or the atomos one, it would cost about the some for both of them so it's more like "do I want ease of use or style and multi-purpose camera that I could also use when I'm doing Snowboard" tough decision

Thanks A WHOLE LOT For your help Budey :D you helped me so much

And Also, I'm not ready to compromise on Quality OR Quantity ;) I want both quality and quantity

My Roadtrip arent really Normal Roadtrip, Most the time I go on the race circuit/drag race and I want to be able to capture everything with multiple angle so when I edit it later, I can show the best viewing angle possible

P.S. I am not gonna be running all 8 of them at once all the time, only when I'm Racing, otherwise, on the highway, I migh use like 3-5 of them but somes days, I get there at like 9 am and i get out at 9pm so that's why i need a special setup like this one and just a simple dashcam wont do it

Why I NEED 8, I want:

-one at the front pointing at the road in front of me

-one at the back pointing at the road behind me

-one on the roof pointing at me(to see the shifter and the steering)

-one at my feet pointing at rhe pedals

-one at the front pointing at the back(in the car so if My friends are doing stupid shi, i can include it in the video)

-one outside the car pointing front at the lever of the weels

-one outside the car pointing back at the level of the weels

and the last one, I am not sure between the top of the car pointing at the front or on the hood to get this amasing engine sound

I'm a bit of a perfectionist so maybe someon else would be ok with just 5 for what I do dx)
