So I've have two sets of fans in my new bulid. The first 3 was the fans that come with my brand new I'd cooling 240 CPU cooler (two of them) and a nzxt 120mm that come with the case (one of them). I have since upgraded all 3 120mm fans to enermax RGB fans and I still have a very noisy pc. I very certain that the PSU fan has had its day. I have many spare fans that I could replace the PSU fan with and would like to.

But...

I thought I'll ask here first if it's a good Idea. I'm very tech savvy and even more so when it comes to hardware.

I'm aware that ev n if the PSU is unplugged that there may be a possibility not a charge still in it components.

How can I discharge the PSU after it removed to make it safe for a fan replacement?

And is it as easy as I think that the replacement is simply remove fan from PSU, unplug fan cable, install new fan and plug in new cable.

Thanks in advance guys

Discharging it is pretty simple. Unplug it from the wall and hold the power button down on your pc for a good 30 seconds or so. As far as fan replacement, it can be done, but whether it'll be easy or a pain in the ass depends on a couple of factors. 1) Make sure your replacement fan is the same size as the psu fan. This includes thickness too for simplicity sake. 2) Make sure the psu fan doesn't have a proprietary connector, and if it does, you might have some soldering to do. 3) For some power supplies, just getting to the fan/fan header can be a pain so keep that in mind. 4) It will void your psu warranty, so just be aware of that.

depends, if the PSU is old you might need to cut and join wires to make it work, some PSUs might use a 3 pin cable

back in my day when a fan died I had to desolder and solder to make a proper replacement job, and oh those 80mm sure used to be really loud and die fast

you're certainly not going to short a capacitor using a paper clip, right?

If the fan is dead, RMA it. If it's out of warranty and the fan is dead, you should probably replace the PSU anyway.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

Its not dead just noisy (i'm guessing bearings)

Its an Antec 750w I bought used as I was on a tight budget for my build.

Its powering my system really well even with a heavy cpu overclock (6600k 3.50 GHz to 4.80 GHz) And a memory overclock (Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB DDR4 2400mhz clocked to 2933mhz) So as you can imagine both needing high voltages that are fluent and stable, and it delivers that.

its just noisy.

There a picture of my pc! (No reason for this picture other than to show you how beautiful my bulid is lol)

Another pointless picture ( just wanted to show how bad my cable management is behind closed doors) lmao

Picture 3 is I've the PSU I have.

Picture 4 is of the fan I have to fit in th PSU. Looks like the PSU has a 140mm fan and my spare is 120mm, dose it matter. I'm sure 120mm would be just as fine.

Any advice on this??

CPUs don't draw that much power, it's the GPU that's the power hog. And the RAM draws a negligible amount of power.

The unit nears 10 years. The performance is not good at all, and the 12V ripple was out of spec in the CL test, at over 120mV.

And at nearly 100mV in this review.

A poor performing 10 year old PSU should be replaced entirely, not just the fan. Since you're bothered by the noise, it's really time to invest in a good unit.

I've disassemble it and I was fine, unfortunately indontbdo rnthe right size fan. I need a 140mm witha 2 pin connector. Where I'm gonna find that I don't know

Did you test it with an O-Scope? No? Then you don't know if it's fine or not.
