Hi,

I have this old set of speakers from the 90s with this receiver from the 80s that travelled with me from Netherlands => France => Malaysia => India => Canada. The casing of the receiver is pretty banged up and in rough shape but it still works like new. And the speakers are absolutely fine. They look basically new. The system just sounds good to me but I don't have much to compare it to.

The speakers: Q Acoustics 1010

The receiver: ROTEL RX-845

All I know is that my dad did a lot of research when he bought this combo. And by that I mean reading lots of audiophile magazines over the course of several months...heck a year! He swears that ROTEL gear is legendary. I can only agree because this thing just works!

I just want to know how good this combo is if I plan to upgrade in the future. I could easily see myself buying an inferior combo unintentionally. But Audio is better and more affordable than ever these days so you never know...From what I can tell Q acoustics is a reputable brand.

Exactly! I have a record player and an Aukey Bluetooth receiver hooked up to it. This setup just works! 0 issues at all. And it sounds good too.

My system consists of parts mainly comprised of Kenwood and Sony equipment that I bought while stationed at Clark Air Base in the Philippines in 1976 and it all works great so far.  Even the turntable still works although it doesn't get used very often.  The Teac 10 inch reel-2-reel works like new also.

The turntable surprises me the most. These things are so unreliable...

I just googled "ROTEL RX-845" and you can pick one up for $65 CAD on Canuck Audio Mart. I'd say it's worth every penny.

Two things to consider with a turn-table.  Is it belt driven or gear driven, and the other thing is the needle.  When I bought the thing, I did not get a regular needle, but had my brother here in the states get me a really good diamond needle.  It cost me twice what the table cost if I remember right.  It's been a few years to say the least.

You clearly know what you’re talking about. But yeah, needles and belts tend to wear out. But I kinda learned the hard way that if your needles wear out fast then the arm on your turntable must be mangled and your records are getting mangled as a result.

I have ave a small collection of brand new records I almost never play because Bluetooth Spotify or Vinyl: it sounds the same (to me). I am sure that I’ll offend many audiophiles but I do what I want in my house with my stuff. The only record that sounded better on vinyl to me was A Thousand Leaves by Sonic Youth. The distorted guitars just sound warmer and fuzzier compared to the CD. I bought 20 records since and regretted it.

Belt driven is obviously better, plus its cooler but it all seriousness belt driven is a lot nicer and when its paired with a air bearing tonearm and a grade epoch for the cartridge the sound is absolutely spectacular.

My current code projects

--------------------------------

  • C#/OpenGL ( using OpenTK graphics library API ) KnightsRealm ( unfinished, WIP plan on releasing on steam maybe a mobile port idk ) 2d topdown pixel art based game with medieval themes, sorcery, dragons, open world
  • C++ crypter ( if your into cryptography, I plan on releasing this on my website later :P
  • C#/OpenGL ( OpenGL for UI ) fan/light controller for my room w/ raspberry pi and some mechanical motors and stuff :D

Current repair projects

  • My dreadful receiver ( a capacitor blew )
  • working on a PC from a client, CPU died within the system, seems like a short, replaced CPU and awaiting payment before I ship it back
  • my old 1tb sas drive for my NAS, some blemishes or something on the PCB need to clear that back out, if it doesn't work i'll need to scrap it ( already backed up all my stuff thankfully )

I understand you don't notice the difference for the people that can hear the difference, there is one. And it is big. In all seriousness, CDs have to much distortion, it may be your opinion but in my personal preference I prefer LPs much more than CDs , Now once you get a budget less audio system with no compromises and getting a pair of IRS V's then honestly CDs sound the same. As the LPs on your previous system and then the LPs sound even better, absolutely astonishing. It is truly wonderful.

Well, my turntable kinda sucks. I bought this budget Sony turntable for $100 on Amazon. It’s belt driven. It works fine actually. I know that turntables can get extremely expensive but being clueless I bought this Sony unit.

EDIT: The turntable is a Sony LX250H. It turns out that it's not a bad little unit. The reviews say that the sound is "good" but not exceptional. It uses an Audio Technica cartridge.

Now I am an audiophile but I've been in the business for many years and I understand your in a tight budget, but If your going to listen to music on such a low budget you shouldn't get a turntable, turntables do in fact bring nicer noise and less distortion than laserdisc ( gosh, who remembers that? ) or CD or even vhs. But in the grand scheme of things LPs are indeed better than the vast majority of other things like that. And of course the only way to play a LP is through a turntable. Plus its very nostalgic. If you want good sound your obviously going to have to pay its the same way with turntables otherwise your getting the same sound as a cd.

That goes hand in hand with amps, pre amps, and speakers/headphones.
