Yeah , the 970 is a better offer here clearly , its probable they just didn't update the pricing on the 850 evo , which technically isn't current-gen anymore.

However you'll need an am4 based build OR an intel build with the z97 chipset or newer for you to boot off the 970 evo

Ok, but I just noticed that it doesnt match in my budget... This is stupid question, but look... It says "NVMe", "Pcie" and "M.2" on SAME SSD. How is that possible? And what does NVMe mean btw? Could you recommend me some good budget 500gb ssd, I dont actually need hdd, so here is my build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/L3QyV6 you see that I dont have memory cuz idk what to choose... But hey I just got recommended a SSD called EX920 and it seems pretty new... I checked on benchmark that it was 100% faster than evo860, and they dont have much price difference... Why would people buy 860evo if there is a lot better ssd for same price? Here is pic Screenshot_59.png.2b6fadcdd3dedd126eae7d4bf3c5e73b.png

M.2 is the physical connector used , like the sata connector present on most boards.

NVME is the drives internal operating and management protocols , it's older counterpart is called AHCI

PCIE is the protocol used to transfer data between the drive and board/CPU/Southbridge, it's older counterpart is SATA 6gbps

if you want more info :

Anyway , the prices laregly depend on

where you buy and what sales are going on . As you might have noticed NVME drives are usually more expensive than sata based ones like the 850 evo . looking at pcpartpicker , the 500GB 970 evo is roughly 80$ more than the 860 evo.

About why people buy them ? Well first and foremost , you're comparing a fairly high end SATA SSD to NVME drives , which are pretty much all high end at this point. There are much cheaper 500GB SATA drives out there .

Plus , as mentionned , you pretty much need a recent system to make use of NVME , which isn't always available. The 850/860 evos have also been on the market for some time now , while the hp drive you showed is very new

An NVMe drive runs on PCIe lanes, M.2 is simply a form factor that can either be PCIe NVMe or SATA depending on the drive and M.2 slot.

I own a EX920 has been a great drive thus far. But Pilot just released a drive that is an even better value with great performance:

Some people simply cheap out, some people are unaware, others don't have an M.2 slot / are already using all their M.2 slots slot and must stick with standard Sata.

How good system I need? Check out https://pcpartpicker.com/list/L3QyV6 that is the build I am planning. So you mean that nvme requires more from system than sata, even though they would have same speed? This is the question I have looking answer to, so say YES or NO or something else.. thanks

Your PC build has an M.2 slot and would benefit from a PCIe NVMe drive.

I would recommend giving the Mushkin Enhanced 500GB Pilot M.2 a look.

NVME does require more CPU power from your system than sata , simply because drives are faster yes, but i was actually referring to the chipset on your board , which is compatible , so don't worry about it

Yeah , it's totally fine . As i said in my post above , CPU power isnt the issue , it's more about board compatibilty

Ok but I asked that how good system NVMe ssd requires?

It's not that system needs to be "good" or much faster than a normal PC it really just needs the slot... basically anything short of a toaster with a PCIe compatible M.2 slot will benefit from a PCIe NVMe drive.

@Coaxialgamer

they are just connectors/form factors . There are a couple 2.5 NVME drives out there , but the vast majority are m.2

If you're comparing an m.2 NVME drive to a SATA 2.5" drive , then the answer is yes

Lemme search some m2 nvme, and I post it here to ask if its good for its price.

I don't mean to sound like a broken record but please check out the Mushkin Enhanced 500GB Pilot M.2, I find it to be the best value at this time. Only $15 more than an 860 EVO yet has 5x the read and 4x the write.
