So here's an odd one for you. I'm putting together a retro build from some parts I have around.

A Shuttle sk22g2

(all the specs are here: http://global.shuttle.com/news/productsDetail?productId=99)

I have 2 GB DDR2 ram, which is seen fine, and I just installed an AMD Athlon x2 64 5200+ CPU

(this one specifically: https://www.ebay.com/itm/AMD-ATHLON-64-X2-5200-2-7ghz-AM2-ado5200iaa5do-65w-5200-USA-Seller-1MB/232369968961?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649)

Which according to the CPU supported list here: http://global.shuttle.com/news/productsSupportList?productId=99

Is supported with the BIOS revision of SK22S20R

The system POSTs with "AMD model processor unknown" but with proper speed and cores (2.7 and 2) shown.

I update the BIOS to the latest, which is SK22S20V, but it still shows this error.

Ditto in Win7, and ditto in CPU-Z (shows as a Brisbane architecture)

Everything I have read says "update BIOS to solve issue" well, I've updated the BIOS, and the issue remains.

It's a minor issue, but I'm wondering if perhaps I've got a defective or counterfeit CPU, or the issue lies elsewhere?

Might be an unrecognized stepping that's to blame. If it works correctly, I'd just leave it and ignore the issue.

PC Specs - AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D MSI B550M Mortar - 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR4-3600 @ CL16 - ASRock RX7800XT 660p 1TBGB & Crucial P5 1TB Fractal Define Mini C CM V750v2 - Windows 11 Pro

That sounds plausible.

The solution would be to get a new CPU?

Actually SK22S20T since it's 65nm 65W TDP version of the CPU, but yeah your bios is still much newer.

There were actually ridiculous number of revisions of 5200+ so I'd go with @NelizMastr 's explaination. Perhaps they added the G1 stepping and never bothered to add the G2 stepping. If it works, there's nothing to fix :P

Cool. Something I didn't know.

Thanks.

Off-topic, any ideas what the temps ought to be on that CPU?

It's in that small shuttle box and Core Temp (the software) shows each core at ~50, which seems to me to be a tad high for a 65watt CPU, but perhaps I'm wrong?

I used to have a 5000+ Brisbane on a stock cooler and it had about the same temps (5-55) in a regular desktop case, so if that's a load temp, you're fine.
