I'm really tired of sorting out this crap so I'm gonna ask here lol. I got an eos M3 on sale cuz it's an old model. Now the auto focus situation bugs me. Focusing outdoors is fine but when I try to video my own phone's screen it refuses to focus. Half pressing the shutter button just focuses a bit before it goes completely out of focus and gives me a red box with an exclamation mark. It sorta only happens when I put it somewhat close to the camera. Touch focus doesn't do anything and the manual focus ring requires an endless amount of turning. It's not just my phone screen but most close up objects that it can't focus on. Even my cheap redmi note 5 pro can focus better than that thing. Please help me.

maybe the object is too close fo r the lens to focus.  camera lenses has minimum focus distance

yeah what would i know about cameras or cinematography compared to you tech people.  i've only done this work for nearly 20 years, won a few awards, worked in over a dozen different countries and a few multi million dollar projects

Well that sucks. Is there any way to solve that? I'm using the 18-55mm efm lens. I'm a noob in photography btw

hold your phone further away from the lens and zoom in all the way. Other than that, no. well except maybe buying a macro lens, which you shouldn't do just for that reason.

Why are you recording your phone's screen with a camera? just use screen capture or smth.

EDIT I just checked Canon's website, the minimum focus distance is 25cm on the 18-55mm, which is very close, can't have a reasonable expectation for more. Hell my 100mm f/2.8L only goes to 15cm for God's sake.

OK then, I'll just do that. Regarding why I'm trying to record my phone screen with a camera, I was just playing around with the camera. I'm not crazy or anything just to let you kbow

The EOS M3 is known to have a dreadful AF so you're out of luck in this regard. To make it work you need the best lighting possible and take the minimum focus distance of the lens in consideration that's the distance between the object and the sensor of the camera and it's found in the spec of the lens.
