Which would be best for streaming?

Hey guys, not really sure if this is the right forum but anyhow, I'm thinking of giving streaming a bit of a go and wondered which would be the best way to stream.

 

I have my main PC which I will be playing games on:

1080ti, i7-8700k, 16gb ram, SSD storage, ethernet connection. I can play and stream using this PC

or I could use my laptop as a standalone stream PC.

960m, i5-6300HQ, 8gb ran, HDD storage, wireless connection.

 

I'm only really toying with the idea right now, but wondered how demanding streaming is.

The laptop is basically unused unless I'm travelling, so while on the PC, is just on a shelf, so if it's worth making use of it, I can

 

Also, if using the laptop as a PC, do I need a capture card, or would that be only if I was saving my stream?

The laptop can probably render video depending on the quality you're looking for.  I've got an old Phenom II X4 which can do CPU rendering in real time for 720P for example (that's without a decent video card).  You could probably mess around with CPU or GPU rendering on the laptop to tune the best performance for your setup.

 

How demanding streaming is and whether you need a capture card are difficult to answer exactly... Here's what I've tried personally:

 

My setup: Main PC plays games and streams lightly compressed video to stream PC (somewhere on the order of 40MB/s or close to uncompressed).  Main PC doesn't have to do almost any work on video encoding since you have a lot of bandwidth between the main PC and the stream PC.  You still do *some* encoding on main PC, but it's almost negligible.  Then you set up the stream PC to receive the data from the main PC (eg: with an NGINX RTMP server), apply whatever effects or transitions you're interested in, then stream to your desired streaming service.  Upside: You don't need to buy an expensive capture card and fiddle around with their software.  Downside: That wireless connection probably won't do.  You'll want to be wired with ethernet given the amount of bandwidth you'll be pushing to that computer. 

 

It may be difficult to set up without a capture card though, because you need to basically run your own RTMP service on the laptop which will likely cause more than one headache.  A capture card on the other hand usually comes with software that aids setup and streaming so there's almost no headache (usually), but it comes with a price.

If you are just starting as streaming, don't overdo it. Viewers aren't after people who have godlike image qiality, they want content and personalities.

100% true.  Hence the reason I've only gotten about 5 or 6 after 5 years =(^.^)=

If I have to explain every detail, I won't talk to you.  If you answer a question with what can be found through 10 seconds of googling, you've contributed nothing, as I assure you I've already considered it.

 

What a world we would be living in if I had to post several paragraphs every time I ask a question.
