290X or 580

Currently have an R9 290X and by the looks I wouldn't really notice a difference in games with a 580 but power consumption and possibly noise would go down.

Is it worth the switch?

It comes down to what you want. If you think your 290x is too loud and you would rather enjoy a silent gpu it might be worth it. I personally dont care about noise levels (#NoiseCanellingHeadsetsMasterRace)

The only thing you're gaining here is efficiency. You basically get the same FPS but with half the power draw and better temperatures. Not exactly worth $300. I'd look at something beefier to upgrade to, such as a 1070 or a Vega56.

Unless you have a Freesync monitor, 1060 is the more logical sidegrade imo.
