CPU Upgrade

Go to solution Solved by Sernefarian,

As far as motherboard support download CPU-Z and check for motherboard model and bios version which will be displayed in the application then use google to search for the motherboard model. It is near certain that the vendor will have a CPU support list available for the board, and highly likely that they will have bios versions available. The CPU list will tell you which version of the bios will be necessary for which particular processor. If the vendor's list shows that your current bios version has support for your planned in socket upgrade then everything should be just peachy.

If you happen to know what is the wattage of the PSU you are currently using, and which GPU do you have installed?

I have a Dell prebuilt computer that currently has an Intel g3220 as the processor and I'd like to upgrade it to a Intel i5 4460. I know that they are both the same socket which is lga 1150, but do I need a bios update or anything? My motherboard is some generic crap. Can I just plop in the i5 without any hassle? It's just 30 watts more and I've added a GPU that was 30 watts more and did benchmarks to see if the PSU can handle it and it worked fine. That means that the PSU can probably handle the i5, I hope. Thank you for your time and please help. It comes in 10 days.

It'll probably just work but how much is that i5? Wouldn't highly suggest you just shoot for an i7 of some kind.

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

The reason that I purchased the i5, is due to it being cheaper. I'm low on money right now and the lga 1150 platform is aging. I'll probably build a Ryzen system next year when Zen 2 comes out.

We would not be able to predict if the next generation/s of Ryzen CPUs would be better than their competitors or even what platforms for CPUs are going to be in the future, for now Ryzen is a good option on the market although this might change later down the road.

Hope this information post was helpful  ?,

So you already bought the CPU?

i7 3000s look to be around $80 on the US ebay at least

The 4c/4t of an i5 isn't going to be a huge improvement depending on what games/programs you run. I7/Xeon with 4c/8t would be much better. You may not see an improvement with your purchase.

Black Knight-

Ryzen 5 5600, GIGABYTE B550M DS3H, 16Gb Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000mhz, Asrock RX 6800 XT Phantom Gaming,

Seasonic Focus GM 750, Samsung EVO 860 EVO SSD M.2, Intel 660p Series M.2 2280 1TB PCIe NVMe, Linux Mint 20.2 Cinnamon

Daughter's Rig;

MSI B450 A Pro, Ryzen 5 3600x, 16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000mhz, Silicon Power A55 512GB SSD, Gigabyte RX 5700 Gaming OC, Corsair CX430

I'm just trying to do an intermediate upgrade. I'll do a full system build next Christmas. This is just so that I can play GTA V at 1080p. The Pentium g3220 can't even run GTA V with a GTX 1050ti.
