It certainly could be done though.

 

Look at Natural Gas. In the US and Canada, in most cities, you can expect a Natural Gas hookup in most houses.

 

Now, they've had decades to build up that infrastructure, so it's probably not worth the investment.

 

 But I'd be interested in seeing the numbers to see how big the gap to practicality is for it.
