Hi there.

My Mobo died some time ago, so I thought it was high time that I upgraded my rig. I had an AMD 9590FX, but I couldn’t find any shops that actually still sold Mobos for that CPU, so I ended up deciding to just upgrade my Ram, CPU, and Mobo. (I already have 1060 GPU, so no need to upgrade that)

I use my PC for gaming 98% of the time. The games that I play can be very CPU heavy games like Vermintide 2 and Total War Warhammer 2. Others games that I also play are Witcher 3, Rainbow Six and Doom to name a few.

I don’t do OCing since that is the reason for my last CPU busted my Mobo (I think).

My budget is around 800 USD, and this is what I have found so far:

-          ASUS Strix Z270H Gaming, Socket-1151 Link: (I have an H220 WC that fits)  https://www.komplett.dk/product/909949/hardware/pc-komponenter/bundkort/intel-socket/asus-strix-z270h-gaming-socket-1151#

-          Intel Core i7-7700K Kaby Lake Processor Link: https://www.komplett.dk/product/909949/hardware/pc-komponenter/bundkort/intel-socket/asus-strix-z270h-gaming-socket-1151#

-          G.Skill Trident Z RGB 2400MHz 16GB Link: (I got this cuz rainbow…) https://www.komplett.dk/product/916433/hardware/pc-komponenter/hukommelse-ram/gskill-trident-z-rgb-2400mhz-16gb#

Total price = 830 USD

Note, I live in Denmark, so the prices are probably lower in other countries.

Is this the best choice? Or is the I7-7700k overkill for gaming, and should I get something like a like an I5-8600k and use the rest for an SSD?

Thanks in advance.

Man! The i7 is totally overkill for gaming. The core i3 8100 is actually more than plenty. Actually, that might probably be a downgrade from your previous CPU (I am not sure). Why do you need such a powerful CPU!?

I also don’t understand the need for a super advanced motherboard with all of the gizmos and features you may not use. I would just buy the most basic motherboard from an established brand. I would actually get an H310 motherboard and I’m not even joking.

1 stick of 8gb RAM is also plenty. You can upgrade to 16gb when the price of RAM goes down. But if you can afford 16gb of RAM there’s a case for it (if you don’t ever want to worry about RAM in the future).

These are my 2 cents. I know that most PC builders on this forum would roll their eyes at the idea of buying a cheap motherboard and only 8gb of ram. But the cheap motherboard makes sense if you buy a low wattage CPU that doesn’t really overclock. And since the i3-8100 has a low TDP it doesn’t need much cooling either. The stock cooler is more than enough.

I've been saving up for a long time, and I want something that kicks total ass. I'm talking RGB and the whole charade, something that I don't have to upgrade for the next 3-4 years.

I want to play everything at ultra settings with at least 60 FPS

I know what you’re saying but the core i3 8100 will accomplish that with flying colours (at 1080p) because the only “bottleneck” so to speak is the GTX 1060!

At the end of the day, I can’t stop you from buying fancier parts that look cool.

As for the GPU. I know its only a 1060, and yes I only have a 1080p monitor. But i want to upgrade to 1440p, or maybe even 4k.

Again the reason for the overkill is that I don't want to change those parts before they break.

(Also, the GPU i have is an ASUS GeForce GTX 1060 6GB Strix Gaming if that helps)

You could make a case for the core i5 8400. Only because future games (I am talking 4+ years from now) might leverage 6 cores. But there’s no point in going above 6 cores just for gaming, even with a GTX 1070.

It’s like the new core i3 is the core i5 from last year and the new core i5 is the core i7 from last year. If that makes sense.

And it would do find for 1440P?

I'm aware but hyperthreading is exclusive to i7 so you can't compare logical processors to physical processors

And the higher the resolution the more strain on your gpu....the better the cpu at 4k won't make a noticeable affect

I may be wrong.

I see no reason why you should sped $800 for these things.

1. 7700k is worse than 8600k as a gaming CPU. 4 cores with Hyperthreading perform worse if not equal to 6 cores without hyperthreading, since games dont use HT that well.

2. Too expensive for previous gen stuff that has 0 upgrade path.

3. My pick will be

8600k https://www.komplett.dk/product/950613/hardware/pc-komponenter/processorer/intel-core-i5-8600k-processor#

Z370-F https://www.komplett.dk/product/956667/hardware/pc-komponenter/bundkort/intel-socket/asus-rog-strix-z370-f-gaming-s1151#

Corsair Vengeance RGB 3200MHz C16 https://www.komplett.dk/product/954636/hardware/pc-komponenter/hukommelse-ram/corsair-vengeance-rgb-ddr4-3200mhz-16gb#

You can use your Trident Z RGB, with a small performance hit in the form of frame rate stability when it's past 100fps.

FX 9590 is bad at games, so the 8100 will easily beat it. High frequency doesnt necessarily mean it's fast.

1070ti not needed! I have a GTX 1060 6gb and it’s king at 1080p. You can play almost every game on ultra at 1080p, unless it’s the latest unoptimized game which everyone benchmarks.

I have a 1070, and it's not hitting 60fps average if I crank the settings all the way up now in every game, not to mention 3-4 years in the future

Future proofing is a fool's errand.  It is far more practical to buy what works now, and sell it in the future as there will be faster, cheaper parts available then.  A GPU that someone would have paid 1500 for (cough, cough, titan) for 5 years ago is outperformed by a $259 RX 580 today.

I edit the shit out of my posts.  Refresh before you respond.

Also, the difference between ultra and high is usually not even noticeable.  Just because Deus EX doen't let you play dev mode, you shouldn't replace a card 90 percent of gamers would be ecstatic to have.  Like seriously, before 2016, there was nothing out that performed as well as the 1070

Only applies to top end products like 1080ti and X299 platform. 1070ti is good enough in value to be worth buying for less upgrade attempts.

1080p ultra everything and 60fps+ is what OP asked for, not my choice. I didnt say I max out my games all the time either.
