Intel 8086k Fastest Ram

I just picked up an 8086k and am trying to find out what is the fastest ram I can run with it.   I notice that Intel says 2666mhz is fastest.  How do you know how fast you can go?  I also understand the motherboard plays a part as well - and I havent picked out a mobo yet but I am leaning towards the Gigabyte Ultra Gaming Z370.  I want to buy the fastest ram I can afford (within reason), but I want to make sure it will run on my rig.   Please note, I am not an extreme overclocker...

You don't know, it depends entirely on your motherboard, RAM and specific chip.  But the benefits above 2666 are minimal anyway it seems.

kinda depends on what motherboard and how well the IMC of the CPU is.

for non-extreme overclocking, ya'd figure in the 3866 area? if not using intensive RAM applications, kinda mute wanting RAM speed (ridiculous price point).

2666MHz is just JEDEC spec. That's what's actually validated by Intel IIRC. Basically, it's guaranteed to work. Everything else is just an overclocked (XMP) profile. Although those really, fast kits will have ICs that are built to handle the speed.

 

Get yourself a 3400-3600MHz(C16) kit if you don't want to go too nuts. You could stretch to 3866MHz but make sure that you're going for a good kit with timings that aren't complete garbage.

 

How fast you can go is a combo of RAM IC, motherboard memory tracing and CPU IMC capability. Well that's usually how it works anyway.

If you rae not doing things like intensive computer simulations/rendering, then you definitely won't benefit from RAM speeds higher than 3000 MHz (on an Intel platform at least).

Nevertheless, the maximum speed depends on the combination of your different hardware configuration. You can tinker with the settings and overclock your RAM clock speed, latencies etc. but as said, it depends on your setup.

 

FYI: we've hit the 5 GHz milestone a few years ago if I'm not mistaken
