Hey all,

Its been a long time since I have had a computer that wasn’t OEM, and I am very novice when it comes to overclocking.

I was was able to get an older computer that has an AMD FX 8120 CPU paired with a Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 REV 1 MB. It has a fairly large cooler fan attached - not sure of the make.  It’s running 16gb of ram.

I have done some research and this is an unlocked CPU and can be overclocked.  I have watched some videos and I am still unsure of the process.

This is just a computer I am using to edit and render some YouTube videos for, so I don’t need the Speedest system, but a bit of extra speed never hurts.  I am not looking to add a ton of fans so I don’t want to overclock it past the point where the existing cooler won’t work well enough.

Are there some some basic rules for overclocking?  Is it even worth it?  Again, super noob here so any advice would be appreciated.

Yes overclocking helps alot on a old CPU to keep up with new ones. You can evern over clock memoery and your GPU if wanted.

Only if you can actually overclock the CPU.

That isn't really the case here..

ALl he might or might not get is +10% CPU Clock and maybe 20% NB Clock, if he's lucky...

And looking for an 8300 series processor makes little sense if we are talking about more than 50€ or so. With a bit of goodwill or so, maybe 70€ but not more.

According to the research I did, the CPU is fully unlocked and I can overclock in my BIOS. I guess the question is: is it really worth it?  I bought the computer because it was a good price $200ish and it has decent performance for what I need. I am not a gamer, so running stuff in 1080p is not a priority.
