Now that graphics card prices are coming back down, I've been looking at upgrading from my ancient 280X. For gaming, I play at 1080p, but I want to have absolutely every option set to Ultra without dropping below 120FPS. I also have a Kraken x62 and G10 bracket that will be handling cooling duties, and I'm firmly against NVidia business practices. So I'm wondering what the LTT community recommends between:

RX580

Pros:

  • Cheapest option by a country mile
  • Typically smallest cards
  • Low TDP

Cons:

  • Weakest option by a country mile
  • GPU die and memory are separate units to cool

Vega 56

Pros:

  • GPU die and memory are together
  • Significantly more powerful than RX580
  • Not quite as expensive as Vega 64

Cons:

  • Gimped compared to Vega 64
  • Considerably more expensive than RX580

Vega 64

Pros:

  • Most powerful option
  • Not much more expensive than Vega 56
  • GPU die and memory are together

Cons:

  • Most expensive option
  • Highest TDP to manage

Any opinions or advice would be appreciated, thanks!

That the GPU and memory are separate on the 580 isn't a bad thing, GDDR and flash memory in general wants to be pretty hot to work right.

I don't think the 580 will put you at ultra in everything 120fps+ so the Vega cards are your best options unless you want to buy a used R9 Fury or 295x2. I'd get the 56 and flash it to see if you can get a 58 or even a 60

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Realistically speaking depending on the game you kinda have no other option but the V64 and even so the 1080 Ti is cheaper and more senseful.

I do want to note though that truth be told the best would be the V56 if you can find one that's not overpriced (as the 1070 Ti often is a pretty much better deal) and understand that Ultras are idiotic to chase:

Either ways if you do have all this $ to burn I reinforce that the 1080 Ti is unbeatable in price-to-performance on the highest end.

Even with AMD's top of the line Vega 64, you might not always get 120 fps minimum with everything maxed, not on modern AAA titles anyway.

The only card that will do that for you is the 1080 Ti, but since you're against Nvidia products...
