Whenever I watch certain MP4 videos I get this error part way through the video, when I click on the button labeled "Web Help" it takes my to a page which says that I might not have the right "codec". I tried installing a codec but long story short it didn't work. How can I fix this? And if I really do need a codec could somebody tell me where to get one that actually works.

What is actually supposed to go here? Some people put their specs, others put random comments or remarks about themselves or others, and there are a few who put cryptic statements.

Not to be irritating, but I don't like VLC.

Use Foobar2000 a lot better truth be told. Just make sure to have multiple playlists for everything even random playlists.

Use VLC.

VLC is mostly for video not music, even though you can use it for music Foobar2000 is the VLC for the music world.

NEVER GIVE UP. NEVER STOP LEARNING. DONT LET THE PAST HURT YOU. YOU CAN DOOOOO IT

I understand that you don't like VLC but maybe just give it a shot to see if it works.  Process of elimination, if it works then you have identified the problem as Windows Media Player and if it doesn't work, then the problem is something else.  For myself, I would use anything except the Windows Media Player so I use a combination of VLC and the Aurora blu-ray player.

OP is trying to watch videos, not listen to music.  OP try MPC-HC then.
