So, To start this off I do have gig speeds via various internet speed tests but my problem comes down to actually downloading at those speeds. Origin gives me 7mb/s, steam gives me maybe 30 and even google chrome barely downloads...

I have a stable amber light and a blinking yellow and from myh knowledge that means up to 100? I'm not sure what's going on but ISP said since speed test shows gig they can't help. Was thinking about replacing mobo. I'm not sure what's going on anyhmore.

Keep in mind that Steam, Origin, and I believe Chrome all display in MegaBytes (MB/s) by default and internet speed is in bits. 8 bits in 1 byte so the speeds they show will appear slower, just different measurement units (multiple MB * 8 to get it in Mb/s). The other thing is that not all servers, depending on load and other conditions, can serve up at gigabit speeds and depending on the download size it might not be able to reach those speeds before finishing. Obviously even 240Mbps (30*8) is still far slower than gigabit speeds though and I know most of the time steam can serve up near gigabit speeds so time for some questions.

What model motherboard?

If you go to Network and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings > Right click on the adapter > Status   does it show 100.0 Mbps or 1.0Gbps?

Wired or wireless?

Ok. Big B equals Bytes little b Equal bits. It matters. 1Gbps is about 125 Megabytes per second. 8 bits per byte. Steam is known for having shit servers. I mean hell they go down to a crawl every steam summer sale. Just be cause you got a Gig pipe does not mean the server's your connected to can give you a Gig download rate. Remember servers tend to serve multiple people at a time not just you.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

What do you mean "before this happened"?

Did you change plans or the router or something?

Just pulled up the manual for your board btw and orange mean gigabit for the NIC so it's operating correct from that standpoint.

How is your network laid out?

i have a modem/router combo from the ISP themselves. After some windows updates and a pc reset because of new hardware, it stopped actually downloading at the speeds it was going at. 21 gb game should take like 5-7 minutes instead it took an hour

Your on Cable Internet, I though you were on Fiber? If you have 1 Gbps speeds, to my knowledge only Docsis 3.1 modems can do that. While Docsis 3.0 standard can do up to a Gigabit, NO US cable provider will provide a Gigabit connection on Docsis 3.0. Who's your provider?

This to me sounds driver related. Or Windows Related. Have you tried checking speeds on other devices? Id also run speeds tests, as in multiple from multiple providers. DSL reports has a good test, Fast.com, and Speedtest.net. This way we can narrow it down to the whole network or just a single machine. Because if its a single machine, then buying a new modem wont fix the issue.

Provider would be Midco. And Thanks for the knowledge, now that you say it i'm rather sure this modem/router that i'm using is 3.1.

Fast.com has me at 300mbps, Speed test has 811 mbps, and DSL speed test waas 390

Here are my thoughts. You said something about a Windows update and a reset. I still think its a driver related issue. If a new driver doesn't help, then possible a modem or signal issue. Signal issues can be determined by checking out the modem diagnostic pages, not all providers give access. But it allows you to make sure your signal is in spec. Being out of spec or just with in can cause issues. As temperature causes a 3dB change in signal through out the day. So if your on the edge of acceptability, warmer temps can cause you to go out of spec. You might want to call your provider to see what they can do. I remember when I had signal issues, so bad that even our cable boxes (When we had cable) would cut out a random. Comcast ended up having to replace the drop, that physical equipment on the pole that allowed customers to connect to the network.

Well i'm not sure how to determine signal strength. Networking isn't something i'm knowledgeable on haha. Every now and again my Wifi will drop, but ii'm still not sure what's going on.

Depending on location Midco can be terrible, they way over extended the network in some locations and as such rarely is it possible to get 1Gbps in those locations. However I agree it sounds like a windows or driver issue.

Midco is pretty ass but compared to SRT a gig for 84 bucks or 300 downf or 120 dollars :/

Well, you must be in the Minot area lol! It all depends on the service and your usage. For example, a 300mbps service with 10ms latency is far better than 1gbps at 100ms ping. Looking at stats most of our customers who have a gig connection rarely use over 50mbps, except for short quick periods. Also is it a shared medium? Cable from Midco is while SRT depends on what type of service, I know they offer 3 types of fiber as well as ADSL, VDSL and G.Fast. As for just straight price, it's a no-brainer. Full disclosure I am an operations engineer for SRT but have used bother SRT and Midco and assist many of my friends who use Midco. As I said before Midco is hit or miss and SRT all depend on where you live and what type of service you can get.

well it's definitely funny to hear from someone who is in the same area haha. I live on the base at the moment and when they introduced the gig, they decided to give it to me for free. was working fine for a first few months then I had to move dorms and since then it's caused nothing but problems. Whether it be the wifi or the download. Just now i downloaded MGS5 at 60 mb on steam but league is downloading updates at 1.5mb xD

Have you tried connecting your computer directly to the modem without the router?

maybe the router is not powerful enough. and also make sure that the server from where you are testing the speeds can do Gigabit

Using an ethernet cable dorectly to the modem router woudl be the best way to maximize speeds. The more things it has to go through the worse. also wifi rarely gets full speeds.

it's a modem/router combo. Like a two in one

It sounds like it could be an issue with the servers you are downloading from. Even if you have 1 Gbps available the server you are connected too may not. Remember the internet is a 2-way street and if a server is overloaded your download may be limited despite your available bandwidth. You may also need to look at Midco's load. Cable is a shared medium and depending on how loaded the circuit is your available bandwidth may vary.
