I have a zotac z77 itx motherboard with a h100i v2 cooler. I am right now at 4.6/4.6/4.5/4.4 overclock at 1.29v. Only core 1 and 2 are set the same and 3 and 4 are at different speeds. For some odd reason, my god forsaken motherboard will either not boot or crash when I set all the cores to the same frequency. Anything beyond this X/X/X-1/X-2 ratio will result in a crash. Why is that? (BTW, temp is not the problem, hovering at mid 70s on full load)

It seems like Zotac has a confusing BIOS? That's not how it works. All CPUs cores work at the same frequency at different % of utilization, the x-number of cores limit means the maximum clock speed when x-number of cores are under load.

 

Say 4.6/4.6/4.5/4.4, that means 4.6GHz when only 1 or 2 cores are loaded, 4.5GHz when 3 cores are loaded, 4.4GHz when all cores are loaded.

basically means 4.4GHz is the maximum clock at 1.29V. you need to up the voltage for more clock speeds.

@Jurrunio really? i thought it didn't. wasn't there some drama because ASUS enabled an all core turboboost by default?

You were right man. I had to up the voltage to 1.34 to get it stable at 4.5. This is such a huge jump for 1.29 at 4.4!! Here is something interesting tho. Although I had to apply 1.34 to get it stable, it usually stays on 1.29v so temps weren't affected too much.

Yeah, I was about to say, it takes a lot of voltage to get it stable on all core. Indeed once you start going past 4.2-4.3 GHz, it starts needing more voltage.

 

As long as temps are in check, 4.5 GHz is pretty good. My 2700K needs 1.45v to stay at 4.9GHz.

at 1.29v at idle? That's quite high. did you disable c-states?

 

Overclocking just sends efficiency down the drain, and sharply increasing voltage requirements for stability is the cause.

that's insane man, what kinda cooling do you use? I think my h100i is just too weak. My 100% temps are at mid to low 80s. Fans are at 25% tho. I can't stand loud noise.

Set all mine the same, 4.5 was the easiest for stability with little work. I followed a simple guide line with a fancy board but turned out ok. 

 

What are you using for testing? 70c seems a bit low to me.

no not 1.29 at idle. That would be too much. at 4.5 full load its at 1.29 according to hwmonitor but in reality, I set it to 1.34 on bios.

well i am gonna try for 4.6. wish me luck. My goal is 4.7. I want the CPU to be at mid 80s under full load.

Oh, fan noise is nothing to me. lol. My UPS unit idles louder than pretty much everything in my room.

 

I have an H105 with push / pull delta fans. 86C in Intel Burn Test at max...but yeah, jet engine.

 

I agree with the comment that you do throw efficiency away for these higher core clocks.

nvm. I failed. I up the vcore at 1.35 to increase stability a bit more. I think I am gonna draw the line here for now. 4.5 @ 1.35v. But wow.. 0.6 more for 100mhz more... this is such a crappy return.

needless update but I decided to dial it down to 4.4 and be happy at 1.29v. I just didn't want to think about temps.
