I have a nvidia p73 (comes up nvidia geforce4 mx 420), which from what I can tell is a 4x agp card. It is in my dfi p5xv3 board with 512mb ram, running windows xp sp3.

The problem is the device fails to start (code 10), the drivers are installed for it. Device manager can see what it is too, but fails to give any info on it other than it failed to start. The board is agp 1x and 2x and I have set it to 2x in the bios. Also from what I can tell 2x and 4x are compatible.

Has this card worked before?  You can try seeing if this feature is on your board: http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_13957.html

I have faint memories of having a Geforce4 card that wouldn't work in anything besides the OEM board.  Except in that case, I was trying it in an AGP x8 slot, and it wouldn't boot at all.  I think those were picky.

I've got one of those cards too :D

From what I remember, 4x AGP was backwards compatible with 2x AGP, meaning you could use a 2x card in a 4x slot. I haven't seen any evidence to suggest that you could use a 4x card in a 2x slot, logically it wouldn't make sense.

If you have a PCI slot, you can look around for a PCI GPU(and I mean PCI, not PCIe).

I've used a boatload of 4x cards in my old WS440BX with no problem (trying to get 8x working in 4x slots can be interesting though).

All I can think of is that this guy's card is toasted.

Well the card works in the slot as i can still get to windows, I can play Sims 1 but it crashes on pod racer boot up. I also used geforce 6200 which works in the slot and the os knows what it is but also cant start which makes more sense as its 8x in a 2x slot. I also have a ati pci 64mb card that works but was also getting crashing.
