Hi all,

So I’m working on building a new gaming rig. I want to choose components that will let me continue using the computer for quite some time w/o needing to upgrade the CPU, Mobo, RAM, Wireless card, Liquid Cooling, and Case for quite some time. Storage needs to be high speed and reliable, but can be smaller quantity at 500gb-2.5tb for the time being with the ability to upgrade down the road easily, preferably SSDs and/or hybrid HDD. The GPU and peripherals, on the other hand, can be lower quality for the time being, as atm I only want 1080p 60hz+ gaming on highest presets. I will upgrade those down the line as sales appear or newer or cheaper components become more readily available (I don’t want to pay $1k for a GTX1080TI for example, or $1.7k for a monitor). Budget is around $2500. Form factor is mid-size ATX. Thank you all for the suggestions. I will be trying to take suggestions and component recommendations from all commenters.

Buy whatever product is best for you, not what product is "best" for the market.

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

so lets make this clear. you want an OP cpu and ram config so you won't have to upgrade those, but the gpu can be lower range?

For all intents and purposes, yes. The primary purpose of this computer is gaming, along with light academics (STEM). I want the majority of the components to not need upgrading for a considerable amount of time, however for gaming I only need decent performance for the time being. I will upgrade gaming-specific components as time goes on, and will add to the storage of the PC (hopefully not having to replace any of the initial storage systems), same with RAM. CPU, Case, Initial storage and RAM, MoBo, wireless network adapter, keyboard/mouse, headphones and the like should be the primary focus. Budget can reach up to 3k as needed. GPU/monitor only need to be capable of maintaining a steady 60fps on ultra preset AAA titles at 1080p for the time being.

All peripherals included (headphones, keyboard and mouse, monitor), along with the PC and add ons (wireless card adapter if needed). Budget can reach up to $3k as needed. Focus should be on CPU/MOBO/Case/Power Supply and RAM/Storage should be high end low capacity so they can be added on to to expand capabilities without needing to be outright replaced.

What do you want aesthetics wise? RGB? Minimalistic? Color schemes?

Personally, I prefer function over form. I can skip the RGB lighting and have no problem with minimalistic, or whatever is most effiecent in terms of cost and more importantly, performance. Personally I prefer darker colors, so black/blue, black/red, or black/green is preferred.

an i9 would literally be almost half your budget

I’m not sure this would have any benefit for the i7-8700K for what I am using this PC for, but I have considered this as an option if suggested. Not quite 1/3 of the budget. As I think about it, however, it does seem rather unnecessary. How then would the 2700x stack up against the 8700K in your eyes?

with proper ram speed 3200mhz cas 14 ryzen's second gen cpu's, I feel they perform well enough and fps difference wont be more then 10-20max fps (depending on game) this is because of intels faster single core speed which allows more min / max fps.

I do own a 8700k so take it how you will

I believe the 8700K will be the optimal CPU at this time. I would be greatly appreciative of Mobo recommendations for that CPU. I am rather partial to Asus personally
