Heyo LTT.

 

I'm hoping I can get some advice for manual overclocking. In the past I've always used the motherboard presets trusting it would be pretty solid.

However I would like to try manual overclocking to see if I can get more out of my system, if that's possible?

Right now my PC doesn't have any OC setting applied, so everything is running at stock speeds.

 

I'll post my parts list below, hoping you guys would be able to help me out.

 

MOBO: ASUS ROG Strix X99 Gaming (bios is up-to-date)

CPU: Intel Core-i7 6800k

SINK: Corsair Hydro H80i

RAM: Corsair Dominator CMD32GX4M4A2400C14

GPU: ASUS ROG Strix GTX 1080

DRIVE: Samsung 960 Evo 250GB

(Plus other storage pieces and a capture card, if that makes a difference)

1. Start with something reasonable (e.g. 3.7 ghz 1.2v or something)

2. Stress test with something like Asus Realbench to ensure stability for 5 minutes

3. If it passes, bump the core clock by 100 mhz

4. Stress test for 5 minutes

5. If it passes, go back to step 3, otherwise go on

6. If it fails the test but temps are reasonable (Below 80C is a good target) and voltage is below 1.35v bump the voltage up by 0.01v then go back to step 4.

 

Once you hit the temp and/or voltage limit stress test for at least an hour to make sure the OC is stable. I've had OCs that pass a 5 minute stress test fail a 15 minute one.

Awesome, thanks for the Step chart. I'll go through this when I have the time.

I personally leapfrog this stuff, as in - check the typical oc values of most chips and start from there, but what @DocSwag said is the correct and safe approach albeit a bit tedious.

 

To the final stress testing I'd add running Cinebench few times in a row as well because I had it happen to me when my CPU was supposedly stable only to fail at like 7th Cinebench run.
