Hello all,

Just started getting into streaming on my overkill first gaming PC. I am running 1440p graphics for game, output to 1080p for stream (med quality), while pushing an additional 4k monitor to run other apps (discord, OBS, web browser...etc.). My build list should be shown below, if not the important components are:

8700K @ 5Ghz, 16GB 3200 RAM, 1080Ti @ 2Ghz.

While doing the stream I saw my frames in game drop about 30-40 on average from what I am accustomed to, and temps on the CPU bump up about 10C on average. I didn't check to see what RAM utilization was at, so I don't know if that was a limiting factor. Can someone tell me what would be the best upgrade to bring performance back up in game while streaming? If it is CPU or GPU, I am out of luck, but I wasn't sure if another 16GB of 3200 RAM would smooth things out some. I don't know what it most taxed during game streaming.

Thanks for the input.

General nerd and I work in corporate finance. Happy to help!

prob cpu 8700k is overkill for gaming but streaming and gaming should have went with a Ryzen based system

Check your cpu usage / gpu usage while streaming and gaming

However 8700k should handle this task pretty easy so it could be something else

Thanks for the input, I know the 8700K is overkill but that was the theme of the build, to get top tier components. I am still getting around 65-70FPS at 1440p while streaming so its not like it is awful quality, I was just surprised how far it dropped.

I will eventually build a streaming specific system assuming I keep up with streaming regularly, but for now if I can beef up my components to smooth things out that would be ideal.

Change stream type from x264 to NVENC.

Drop in quality (turn bitrate up to compensate, have decent internet though!) but it gets encoded by GPU Video Processing Unit and partially on the GPU (<5%).

I will have to give that a try. Thanks! I think the default bitrate was around 6000?

i have the same setup as you and i use 6k bitrate at 900P at a fast cpu preset and no problems.

i think your pushing the limit with medium tbh

Specs: Ryzen 9800X3D 5425MHz - ASUS TUF RTX 4080 super - G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo 64GB 6400MT/s CL26 -  Gigabyte X870 AORUS Elite Wifi7 ICE - Torrent Fractal Design white - EVGA 850W Supernova G2 80+ Gold - Noctua NH-U12A

Oh so you are thinking with all things considered, using the medium quality present on OBS Stream Labs is what’s tanking the frames so heavily?

Bro those specs are lit. You're making me cry with my g4600 ?

Thanks I appreciate it. Certainly wasn’t cheap. I plan to throw another 16GB kit of RAM in at some point, as well as another Samsung 500GB NVME M.2 for editing, and lastly a Seagate 10TB 3.5” HDD for mass video/photo storage. I’ll likely need a new case for that tho as this only has one 3.5 bay right now.

yes i think so, x264 is pretty rough on any cpu.

also upping the cpu preset is not really worth it if you're at like 6k bitrate already, i'm on Faster preset not fast*

1080p is not worth it on twitch imo because bitrate limits

i don't think you can use 900p on OBS stream labs (not sure) but i use OBS studio.

nice build btw! i just checked that video, i have the same cpu/gpu/mobo combo

EDIT: you can open task manager and check the cpu load% so just run a game at medium preset for example and check what the load % is then try Faster preset and you should see lower % load on the cpu and won't lose much quality

Great reply thanks for the info! I did my first stream yesterday so this is all very new. And I love my build this far, the mobo is excellent I’ve found. Can’t wait to fill out RAM, some more SSD, and a large HDD. Also decieding whether to do a custom loop next year or wait until I do a fresh build and just go from scratch...decisions decisions
