CPU Thermal Paste

NaughtyDog321

Okay so I built 3 computers for 3 different friends that are in my friend group, they all have the same exact build. They use an I7 7700k with a z270 mobo. When I built the computers and had to apply the thermal paste, I wasn't sure exactly how much to put, so I put an amount where the thermal paste once applied and the cooler attached, that it covered the entire CPU in a semi, average layer of thermal paste. It wasn't oozing on the sides really and if it was it wasn't much and I wiped it off, I didn't apply it like icing on a birthday cake though, just very little oozing from the sides. Now I have anxiety that I possibly put too much and will ruin their computer. They have had them for months and have not experienced any problems what so ever. Should I be worried at this point?

You're fine. If you applied thermal paste poorly, problems in temperature will arise immediately after you start stress testing it

What kind of problems would occur, what is the worst thing that could happen, fire...?

Thermal throttling

, that is the system slowing down because of high temperature.

Worst possible occurrence? The CPU burning out, but that would have to be one horrible thermal paste application, otherwise probably just thermal throttling. From the sounds of it you are fine.

Okay good, thanks guys, you really helped me out a ton, what is a normal temp for an I7 after being stressed?

60-70 degree's I'd say.

Just to be sure Celsius? And one final question, I have a Cooler Master Hyper air cpu cooler, If I got black engine/ heat resistant paint, would it be harmful to spray paint the heat sync black?

It's fine as long as you don't cover the plate that touches the cpu. You can make any increase in temps even more insignificant by painting only the top fin which should get most of the same look.
