Your best bet is probably the GTX 1070 (Probably founders edition)

Its quite price hefty but it’s one of the GPUs that give high performance and can work at 1440p.

A 1070 can be around 500$. You can find 500$ ones online. At the moment I wouldn’t recommend buying a gpu as the prices are pretty high due to cryptominers. The prices will soon drop within months. (Hopefully)

when the prices are fixed you can probably get one for 250-300$.

This is probably no use to you since it’s pretty expensive.

GTX1070 will be a good sweet-spot as the others mentioned.

But I'm also curious, what are your current system specifications?

If you for example still rock a Core 2 Quad or 1st Gen i7 looking into an upgrade on those would be a necessity.

Just your requirement is not enough mate, we need your current setup info, your games that you wanted to play. For example if you want to play CSGO 1440p, a 1060 6GB is enough. But if you got a Pentium 4 that would be no use. You get the point @twisterfries
