Howdy all,

So I’ve been doing some research and am interested in making a rig using a decent laptop, eGPU w/ GTX1080TI (provided The laptop won’t bottleneck it), and separate monitor/keyboard/mouse component (or, if it’s already high quality, using the laptop’s display and keyboard). Primary purpose will be gaming, followed by using the laptop for portable entertainment (movies, browsing, etc) and light work. Budget will around $2000-3000. I have zero experience with this kind of setup. I was wondering first if there are any downsides I should be aware of, and then suggestions as to what components I should use, or have been tested by others and found to be compatible and effective.

well it''l be twice the price of a desktop but not any faster with the only advantage being somewhat portable.

well however the gpu interfaces with the machine will be slower than if the gpu was in the correct slot on a motherboard so technically yes it will.

Why this route and not ~$1500-$2000 pc and rest of the budget for a laptop?

Primary reason is my occupation. I am not allowed to have a full on gaming PC in my barracks, nor would it be advisable for when I need a portable computer system for work (just the laptop). However getting a laptop with some accessories should work out to meet my needs. Particularly if I only need a eGPU and mouse, with the laptop contains the other necessary components.

How much slower will it in general? Will the FPS or responsiveness suffer significantly? I do need it to be portable. I like the eGPU b/c I can put it a GPU I wouldn’t be able to with any other laptop, but if a standard all-in-one gaming laptop will both outperform and cost less than such a setup, I’ll look at that option instead.

Yea an all in one laptop would cost less and be a lot more simple. course just getting a proper desktop and laptop instead of trying to go with a weird half and half setup would be even better but we can't convince everybody.

A desktop is not an option due to

my occupation. It has to be a laptop /w accessories at most. What would the performance trade off be of using an eGPU GTX1080TI vs an integrated GTX1070, as well as the cost trade off?
