So, since my laptop ( Asus X200CA ) has been heating up a lot lately, I decided to dissassemble it almost completely ( didn't open the display part ). I found some weird stuff...

Is that a second processor next to the heatpipe? Also, board-integrated ram :/

Why is the heatpipe getting red coloration? Also, that red color under the heatpipe is actually PLASTIC. I decided to remove the heatsink and see why there's plastic there.

Ok, so it looks like the plastic is *somewhat* intentional, as it seems to cover the controllers from the thermal paste. Should I remove it anyway tho? My friend has also recommended to get some thermal pads for my ram and VRMs. Should I?

no reason to, they make almost no heat.

Can I just remove it then? Not sure why there's so much excess thermal paste tho.

You could, but there’s no need to. There’s so much paste because the manufacturer wants to be 100% certain that the device will never need to be taken apart in the near future.

Well....it's 5 years old, so.....

If I were to replace the thermal paste, I just need it on the metal part in the middle, right? It seems to me that there's so many of it because they applied it to the heatsink ( as the marks shows, it *is* bigger than the metal part ) instead of the cpu.

That part is silicon. It’s as fragile as glass, so be careful (because that’s actually the CPU). And yes, you only need to apply thermal paste to that.

Anything non-obvious that I should look out for?

Not really, other than you don’t need the force of a thousand suns to clean it.
