Hi, for years I've been a console peasant, now I want to join the PC master race and upgrade my PC.

I'm attending to buy 2nd hand gtx1060 and I know I should upgrade my RAM memory, now I have 4gb ddr4, can I buy 1 more stick of 8gb so in total I'll get 12gb of RAM?

this is my specs:

Motherboard: ASUS H110M-K

CPU: Intel® Core™ i5-6400 2.7ghz 6mb

RAM: Kingston 4gb ddr4 2133mhz

it COULD work if you use them at the same speed, but it's more luck of the draw

Worst case you lock them to 2133Mhz, that should always work.

If you want my attention, quote meh! D: or just stick an @samcool55 in your post :3

It would be better to just buy two sticks of 8GB of RAM. A lot of times, if ram is a different model it won't work.

Welcome dirty console peasant to the land of high framerates, high res and low temperatures. Joking aside, your CPU looks kinda weak as well. Might wanna get a K series and OC it. You will suffer in CPU intensive games. Make sure to get a 1060 6gb not the 3gb. Get the 6gb model with three or two fans then you can overclock that video card by a hefty margin. Well worth the extra cost.

id try finding 8gb x 2 at 3200 mhz or 4gb x 2 at 3200mhz, just so you can re-use it if you want to upgrade 3 years down the line.

if you want a cheaper GPU you can look for a R9 290x or an GTX 780/ti on the second hand market. should perform roughly the same as the 1060. if you got a good deal on the 1060 then go for that instead.

it is kinda weak, but fine for a lot of games (its singlethread performance is rather good). no need to update the CPU yet, id wait a year or two (maybe three). thats wh you should get 3200 mhz ram as it will be much better once you upgrade.

2020 should be the last generation of CPU you can use DDR4 due to the move to DDR5 in 2021

Hi just discovered this thread. :) You say that he should upgrade his CPU... In a gaming perspective a i5 6400 is just fine. Now, yes you might loose a little bit of FPS in CPU intensive games, however please keep in mind that @xbox360_peasant is new to the PC ordeal and buying a new CPU and OCing it is a lot to take in... Furthermore he would have to buy a the motherboard as the one he has now does not support OCing. :)

Please mention or quote me if you want a response. :)

really? Certain mobos do not support OC? I really didn't know. I apologize then.

You can't mix and match an 8 gig stick with a 4 gig stick, because your motherboard is a dual channel one. And I don't recommend mix and matching memory at all, even if the latencies, clock speeds and sizes are exactly the same. So bottom line then, is to get either a 2x4gb or a 2x8gb 2133mhz memory kit (anything more than 16 gigs is useless if everything you do is just gaming). If you're on a tight budget, get this https://m.newegg.com/products/N82E16820313511?ignorebbr=1&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-PCPartPicker%2c+LLC-_-na-_-na-_-na&AID=10446076&PID=3938566 and use only it... Or this https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00OQY10L4/ref=mw_dp_olp?ie=UTF8&condition=new if you're not interested in aesthetics.

Yes. :) There are certain chipsets on motherboards that does not support overclocking. Toms hardware has a good article about it :) Scroll down to the LGA1151 section. This is a list that is in that article. :) #LearnSomethingNewEveryday (Do people still use #? lol)
