I currently have a 6700K with a Noctua NH-D15 cooler on an MSI Z170-A Pro motherboard. My CPU was thermal throttling because the VRM's were not being cooled well enough, and I found out that the VRM's are actually pretty bad on this board. I figure that if I want to replace the mobo, then I can reuse my current mobo for a home NAS + rendering server. Having an empty Z170 board means I need to buy a new Skylake or Kaby Lake CPU. At that point, then I might as well do a full CPU and mobo upgrade on my system.

So here's the breakdown of what I'll be upgrading and what I'll be buying for the new system.

Config ideas for upgrading my current system:

  • Intel i7-8700K CPU: $347
  • Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E Gaming Mobo: $192
  • New case will be a Be Quiet Dark Base 700: $170
  • Keeping the CPU cooler (Noctua NH-D15)
  • Keeping the GPU (EVGA GTX 1080 SuperClocked)
  • Keeping the PSU (EVGA SuperNova P2 650W 80+ Platinum)
  • Keeping the RAM 2133Mhz (G.Skill RipJaws V 32GB kit (2 x 16GB)

Parts for the Server:

  • MSI Z170-A Motherboard (being reused from current build)
  • Intel i7-6700K (coming from the current build)
  • Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo: $20
  • EVGA - B3 450W 80+ Bronze: $57
  • Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (being reused from current build)
  • G.Skill RipJaws V 3000Mhz 16GB Kit (2 x 8GB): $162
  • 2X WD Red 4TB drives: $125 each for a total of $250

I don't think I need a dedicated GPU for the server (although I do have an Nvidia GT 720 lying around if necessary). I plan to install Windows Server 2016 for the 2nd system, and have it handle streaming over an ethernet connection.

Lastly, if I get a wifi expansion card for the server, can I set up that server to be able to stream videos to my smart devices in my house?

Thank you to anyone who helps me figure this out.

That's a lot of questions. You'd probably need to search out VRM & OC information on the specific boards.

As for the HTPC part, that's an interesting question. You're running a Server with a limited-client front end. So, it's really a Multi-seat setup, with a high-level server/admin and limited client at the same time. I don't think that requires an unRaid approach, but that's interesting. How is the "normal" user going to use the HTPC?

Yeah, I did ask a lot for just one thread lol

I figure the system is sitting in my living room connected to the TV there through an HDMI cable, and all the user has to do is change the TV input from one HDMI to the other. It'll also be connected to the internet in my house through a gigabit switch (that I already have installed in the house), so I can remotely access it easily.

I know "of" multi-seat type of setups, but I have no personal experience with them. I think that's what you're after for the HTPC use.

You might a dGPU to get it to work the way you want, but the Aster Multi-seat really seems like what you'd want. You'd just have the Admin login of a disconnected monitor.

Really, it's quite an interesting piece of software. But, again, no personal experience.
