VRM overheating?

So some development happened:

  • Turns out the VRM's were overheating because the "auto" settings for some parts of the CPU voltage controls were overvolting those parts (note that this "auto" setting is the default option and apparently isn't good at actually doing what the name implies). I forcibly lowered them to what the "default" speeds were and the issues are gone.
  • I managed to raise the OC to 4.6GHz and still hit ~62c on the CPU under an extended Aida64 CPU Stress Test.

TL;DR thanks MSI for bad auto settings in the mobo.

I have a 6700K on an MSI Z170-A Pro motherboard, and Noctua NH-D15 with both of the included NF-A15 140mm fans mounted onto it, and using Noctua NT-H1 thermal paste.

I did some tests with AIDA64 and saw that my mobo's VRM's overheat during those tests, where the VRM temps are shown to be high but the CPU temps are only around the low 70's.

 

What's the best way for me to cool the VRM's? The way my case fans are set up, I don't have any room to have a fan angled directly onto the VRM's. What can I do to cool the VRM's properly?

1. Dont cheap out on your motherboard with a flagship CPU next time.

 

2. Use a downdraft CPU air cooler. The best is the Noctua NH-C14S, followed by the Cryorig C1, Be quiet Shadow Rock TF2 and Noctua NH-C14
