Is there a way to duplicate a folder so that it automatically backs-up to cloud storage but without the main folder being in the cloud storage folder?

So for example, if I had a "cars" folder, I'd have a duplicate cars folder on Google Drive and the contents of both folders would be synced periodically but deleting one folder wouldn't delete the other

Syncing and backing up are not the same thing (see quote) what you want to do is back up your information.

Cloud Storage is in most ways by default a syncing of information unless you change the the proper settings (provided your cloud has these settings) to backup only without deleting or purging information that was copied from and removed from the source device.

Syncing process makes sure that your content (files and data) is the same on your iPhone iPad or iPod touch and computer. However, back up refers to, one way, copying of most data from one location to another.

If they're periodically synced then deleting anything on one would cause deletion of the other. You could set up something so that everything you put in a folder was uploaded to google drive, but it would only be one-way syncing.

I'm cool with one-way syncing. How would I go about doing that?

I really have no idea. You could probably use AHK to do something like this:

When file is placed in folder, do two things:

Copy the file to another folder that's synced to Drive/Dropbox

Place the original file in the original folder.

Then, when you delete from the original folder, nothing's deleted from the backup.

Good luck!

Depending on the service you use [since I do not know i cant assist you.. hint] you will have to open your settings and help file to figure out to set it up to do what you are looking for it to do. Please note that not all cloud services offer these abilities, most only do two-way sync not one way back-up.
