Can't Format Drive?

Just finished building a pc for a family member and in the system they wanted 2 4TB drives + an M.2 SSD.

 

One  4TB drive is split into 3 segments, one for system reserved, and two unallocated spaces of 2047GB and 1600GB. one of which I can set a volume to, the other I cannot.

 

Any ideas?

Disk 0 is the one causing issues.

If you right click the drive header (on the left, the part with Disk 0 on it), then click Properties and go to Volumes, does it show the disk as being MBR (Master Boot Record) or GPT (GUID Partition Table)?

 

If it's MBR you need to convert it to GPT before you can have partitions beyond 2048GB.

I have the same issue and have tried formatting in linux, with diskpart, on a mac, and with various tools and nothing has worked

If it's MBR you need to convert it to GPT before you can have partitions beyond 2048GB.

You have to do it using Diskpart, and I've never tried it on the system disk. Make a backup first, and then if you're willing to reinstall windows if needed, you can run these commands in an admin command prompt:

  

C:\Windows\system32>diskpart

DISKPART> select disk 0

Disk 0 is now the selected disk.

DISKPART> convert gpt

If the previous commands don't work, if it gives you an error along the lines of "The disk is not convertible", then it means that you need to remove all partitions form the drive, clean it using diskpart, and then run the "convert gpt" option again. The best way to do this is from a Windows 10 installer that you boot from - press shift-F10 at the "install windows" screen and you'll get a command prompt to run diskpart from.

Alright, so as I have cleaned the disk through cmd, it destroyed the windows installation. Gonna reinstall it on the SSD with the hard drives unplugged. Wish me luck

@Slottr After having another look at the config in disk management, you may wish to reinstall Windows regardless.

 

Because Disk 0 had no partitions on it when you installed to the SSD, Windows is now fundamentally tied to both Disk 0 - the hard disk - and your SSD. The boot partition is on Disk 0. If the hard drive dies or is removed the machine becomes unbootable even though Windows is on the SSD in its entirety.

 

If you boot the Windows 10 installer again and do what I suggested before to format the disk and convert it to GPT, then create a partition spanning the whole drive, delete all partitions off the SSD and tell windows to install to the SSD's unallocated space.

 

That'll ensure that all of the partitions needed for Windows to run are contained within the SSD. I'm including a picture of my setup to show you what it should look like, since I've encountered this situation before.

 

Also ensure CSM is *disabled* in the bios so that Windows fully installs in UEFI mode.

It was a long shot, but it is the right procedure. In some situations it works on drives with data, but in most cases it needs to be done with no partitions on the drive.

 

There are some third party utilities that can convert MBR to GPT without destroying data, but I haven't tested them. I'm sorry that didn't work for you, but if you remove all data form the drive, clean it (using diskpart, it un-initialises it) and then convert to gpt, it'll fix it for you mate.

Yes, on a MBR disk, you can only use 2TB of space at most, you need to convert this disk from MBR to GPT.

I also noticed your system partition (system reserved partition) and boot partition (C: ) are on 2 different disks, in this case, i suggest you disconnect disk 0, and use a Windows installation media to repair system boot, after that retry converting disk 0 to GPT.

 

Since drive A is 100% free, you can try Tabs's method to convert it to GPT.
