Hello,

I need to get a new printer, and I am looking for one with the following features:

  1. Full Linux support, with in-kernel drivers. This is important, for various hardware I have had in the past published a separate Linux driver but then stopped updating it as soon as they no longer sold the part. In-kernel drivers get updated by the kernel developers, thus eliminating that problem.
  2. The ability to go a long time without printing, without any issue. I print just frequently enough to prefer to have a printer at home, as opposed to using printing stores (a few times per month, with occasional bursts of activity).
  3. Cheap ink, obviously. I would rather have a more expensive printer with cheaper ink. Also, any printers that do that bs where aftermarket cartridges don't work due to an artificial limitation are out of the question. Perhaps a printer with a vibrant market for aftermarket cartridges, with a lot of competition, would be good.
  4. A scanner that also works in Linux, also with an in-kernel driver. This can be a separate, independent, scanner or combined with the printer.
  5. As an alternative to the in-kernel drivers, a printer and scanner that are usable over a network (ie. the printer has a network card) would be acceptable as well, provided that Linux's Samba or CUPS software is able to successfully interface with both the printer and scanner.

Based on my research, I am thinking that a laser printer is deal, based primarily on features #2 and #3, however I am open to any printer provided that it does what I need. Also, the budget is US$100, but I can go up to US$200 if absolutely necessary, especially if that will significantly save on ink. I prefer something that I can order on Amazon with prime 2-day shipping, or that is common enough to be able to find in a nearby physical store in the United States. What printer(s) best fit what I am looking for?

Thank you.

EDIT: This printer will be used primarily for printing forms, reading material, etc. so image quality is not important provided that it works sufficiently well for these tasks.

If you vakue the use of cheap ink: STAY AWAY FROM HP!

I’ll repeat my rant about HP from a previous thread:

I’ve got both a semi-pro HP colour laser printer and an HP ink printer. I was very happy with both of them until HP decided to lock out any third party ink cardridges.

Now I’m buying overpriced ink for my HP ink printer.

Although, since then, I have not yet needed to replace the toners of the laser printer yet. But I assume that any third party toners won’t work anymore either.

So I’m stuck with expensive machines that require expensive ink/toner :-(

Alright, thanks for the advice! This isn't the first thing I have seen about HP, so they are definitely ruled out.
