How dead is my XFX R9 280?

CookiezFort

Yesterday mid-way playing Planetside 2 I got a weird beige coloured screen with very vague coloured lines running down the monitor, the sound started being all weird and the PC was unresponsive.

I thought maybe it was random and started playing again when it happened (this time it was a black screen with faint lines). I also realised that after turning the PC off, the first time I turned it on it wouldn't display anything so I'd have to power it on and off (using the case button) again for it to show something.

After that I removed the card and uninstalled drivers and moved to the onboard intel stuff (I guess its time to play Stardew valley all day?)

Today I decided to plug it in once more and start a game up (after installing drivers). Video of it failing (Sorry its vertical because I remembered mid way through running the game and didn't think about it)

At the mean time I was also running GPU-Z and asking it to log the temperatures etc incase I Wasn't looking at it when it crashed.

The final logged temperature is 62C at 92% load and normal Core Clock and Memory clock.

After that I tried to restart the PC like yesterday but didn't get it to show anything so it might've been the GPU's last death.

If it matters, I tried putting a GT 630 that I had spare on the PC and while the BIOS of my motherboard detected it (said nVidia corporation VGA Chip running at x16). The Drivers I got from nVidia (after putting GT 630 on the option thing) said that no compatible hardware could be found.

EDIT: My GPU failing is not a mighty car mods video.Link fixed

EDIT: Forgot to add that there wasn't a drop in FPS or any artifacting, it just happened.

My PC:

There is another PCI-E 2.0 16X slot I can try which I haven't done yet. The one I've had it on is a 3.0 slot but I suspect there won't be that big of a difference.

I'm just confused as to why it would work fine, then crash like that if its the slot?

*shrug* im not certain that is what the problem is, however, i doubt it would hurt to try.

It's not the memory, because dying memory throws a ton of artifacts to the screen while audio and frame rates stay normal.

It's not the display driver (which powers the display outputs), because a dead display driver wont cause unresponsive PCs, you just stop seeing things.

It's likely not the slot, otherwise the GT 630 wont run

I hope it's not the core, but it's pointing to it.

As for the GT630, is it the DDR3 version? There is one GT630 variant using Fermi core, which is discontinued. You will need a slightly older driver.

By core you mean the actual chip?

I'm not sure which GT 630 it is, it was purchased ages ago. I suspect it might be the fermi based one.

Second pci-e slot doesn't work either. Although now I'm getting no output what so ever even though the card is getting power. Guess its RIP
