Memory channels

If memory channels are dependent on the motherboard, why are ram sticks advertised as dual, single and quad channel?

They're guaranteed to work in that configuration in the respective system. You don't have to worry about compatibility issues. That's more or less it.

 

Also, memory channels are dependent on the CPU's memory controller most of the time.
