JBL's product line is amazing for this. If you want pure portability you can get a Flip 4 for $100 or a Charge 3 for $250. The fun thing about JBL's products is that you can pair basicly every single one from the cheapest to the most expensive giving the family some sort of "upgrade path". You will probably end up buying more speakers to take advantage of JBL Connect+ xD

How's the sound of the Charge 3? Is it just loud or can you actually call it good? xD some speakers are just full base and nothing else..

Anything from BOSE if you want sound and build quality.

And also a Bose tax...

I have a JBL Xtreme that has excellent sound quality (especially considering the price) with whole day battery. Not sure what the price for you is though.

That's an F in the profile pic

You really get what you pay for with BOSE. I wouldn't normally say this as I don't follow that suit but in this case it's very true.

OP my Brother-in-law has a portable mid sized one about 5 years old and its taken a right battering and still blows everything out the water.

Probably gaming or helping technophobes with tech...

Oh believe me its good, However the Flip 4 is a fair bit clearer but not by that much. But the Charge 3 is nice on its own. Just a bit on the larger side ;)
