This may be somewhat controversial but I recently abandoned Android for iOS with an iPhone X :o

Years ago I switched from iPhone 5 to an Android because I could no longer face using iTunes and it seems to be a problem yet again even after all these years!

So the problem is I transferred all my music from PC to the iPhone 20500 songs no problems but when I open the music app and go to Artists there's many missing from the list but they are on the phone for sure because I can find them through the search or I can find them under Albums however they appear under a heading with a question mark (?). I have tried lots of different things to fix this problem and the only solution I know works is if I rename the artists in iTunes then rename them back again forcing a re sync but it would be quite time consuming to do this for all songs and I shouldn't have to do this in the first place considering I spent a lot of time last year using Mp3tag to tag my entire library to make sure they all had Artist, Title and Album Artist fields filled. I've also checked to make sure they aren't being grouped as compilations and they aren't. I've tried using another computer to transfer the songs and I have the same problem (Windows and Mac OS) except the artists missing are different and more are missing than the first time.

All the fields appear correct in iTunes so I cant see why this is happening other than from what I've read it may be down to a bug in the iTunes software (I tried and older version but wouldn't work with the iPhone X).

Assuming all your songs are in a separate location outside of your iTunes Library, you should try deleting your library and start over.

With your library now blank you should do the following.

  1. Sign into the iTunes Store with your Apple ID
  2. In preferences, under the Advanced tab, make sure "keep iTunes Media Folder organized" and "Copy iTunes files to media library" are turned off5af355d99f8c0_ScreenShot2018-05-09at1_09_49PM.thumb.png.a47dd43ac20228aebde8141e68c30a9b.png
  3. Download any purchases you may have from the iTunes Store. Note that some purchases may be hidden and you can view them and download by Viewing your Account in iTunes.
  4. Verify that your songs have a track name (song title), Album Name, Artist Name, and optionally Album Art (you can add/change/remove in iTunes). Having this metadata attached to your songs will make sure iTunes does not group songs under "unknown albums" or makes ghost albums or does not even display the song in your list of Albums.
  5. Make a Music Folder somewhere on your system titled Music, in it, keep all your albums listed as folders and individual tracks below those and sort by name.
  6. Drag this folder into iTunes to Link the files to iTunes and wait for iTunes to import all media
  7. Plug in your iPhone
  8. In your Device tab scroll to the bottom and enable manually manage music and videos on your iPhone if you do not want to mirror your iTunes library form your Mac or PC1.thumb.jpeg.a2d16d86baf3ca1307507362ce08072d.jpeg

Also ensure that you are running iTunes from the Windows store and are up to date.

I have already followed the above steps except for ensuring all songs have an album name as some songs are not part of an album and even those that have albums names don't appear under artists on iPhone. I downloaded iTunes from the Apple website not the the Windows store this shouldn't be the problem surely. does the folder layout matter that much because the layout you described is what I have in most instances in my Music folder already but that doesn't seem to stop them from not showing up on the iPhone under Artist
