I am in need of a NAS in some redundant config. I don’t care about anything being hot swappable but would appreciate a redundant raid.

 

the primary use would be for storage / on-site backup.

 

i was wondering how suitable a DIY Ryzen 2200g based setup would be for something like this?

 

id like the input from anyone with experience in cheap DIY NAS, and no I don’t want a ready made solution (I enjoy building PCs)

Don’t deal with team Intel much ? but what would I need if I go with a celeron? Would I be able to run things off of the SATA headers on the Mobo or would I need a real RAID controller?

Mine is DIY Intel but I don't do RAID (a drive fails and the whole NAS is dead), if a Celeron is cheaper than the 2200g go for the Celeron, most boards support certain RAID setups nowadays.

cheapest way to do something like this is like one of those dual drive My Book external drive units from Western Digital

then get a wireless router that has a USB 3.0 port on it that supports external hard drives like the one on the Netgear Nighthawk routers or the Linksys WRT 1900ACS, thats basically what I did, I used the Linksys router and connected an external hard drive to it via USB, no reason to build an entire computer just for storage.

Your probably want want software raid here, so just use the onboard sata ports and raid in your os(probably something like zfs on linux or bsd, md on linux, btrfs on linux, or storage spaces on windows).

 

You can get a hba if you want more ports.

 

The celeron is cheaper, and normally a bit lower in power and often better compatibily with some oses.

the one drive fail lose whole array is only true with raid 0, this is the point of raid so you can have drive failure and not lose the array.

 

You don't care about board raid support, use software raid for most home server or hardware raid if you want.

Cool. I was thinking of 4-6 HDDs in RAID 10. Some AM4 Mobos will support hardware RAID but I can definitely go the software route. 

 

Ill sift through some of those OSes and see what Ryzen support looks like, and if it’s horrible I’ll build a celeron (autocorrect insisted on celery) one. For those talking about the MyBooks, they don’t offer the kind of reliability I need (and I already have one installed). Plus it’s a fun DIY project

why raid 10? What are you using it for? Performance wise it will be about the same on 1gbe.

 

Id probalby go with zfs with raidz1 here(so raid 5).

Ok so I’ve read up on some stuff... first I realized 10gbe mean 10 gigabit Ethernet which I don’t have. I’ll be running at 1 gbit.

 

now as for why raid 10 and not 5 I based my decision on some recommendations from Raid tech websites that advised against a 5. The raid 10 would stripe and mirror so I get some redundancy and performance out of it. Raid 5 would provide redundancy but I’m not sure if performance.

 

your thoughts ?

what are you running that needs performance? 

 

a since drive will be network limited in most uses.

 

Raid 5 will be a good amount faster than a singe drive, so you will get speed here. raid 10 is mainly for iops.

Mostly backups and storage... I’d like to max that gigabit Ethernet.

a single drive will max gig ethernet.

 

Id just run raid 5 here with something like freenas(or unraid if you want easy expansion.)
