Monitor shuts off when getting into DOTA 2, GPU related?

Infernalz

Going to help someone with a new computer they got from Offer Up and hoping to get some ideas on what this problem might be. My first thought is the GPU since it happens when getting into a game and affecting the display.

What I've been told is that on the settings menu/launcher(? I don't play it) it's fine but when they launch a game it can play for a few minutes then it will go black and log them out of the game. Unfortunately I don't have much more info as of now but I'm looking for some ideas to look for when I get there and help.

Again, I'm guessing GPU could be the issue (hopefully not) or some cooling issue somewhere; the DVI cable he bought for it: maybe the monitor itself; a power saving issue in windows?

Knowing what monitor it is might help. Could it be it's not liking some resolution? Too high maybe, hell I even have a couple that won't scale too low.

muh specs

Reinstall the drivers, and try running the game in  Windowed or Borderless mode, I use to have this issue with a laptop where when playing on an external monitor, if I launched LoL it would cause the monitor to go out of range, but it worked fine in borderless mode.

Desktop: i9 11900k, 32GB DDR4, 4060 Ti 8GB 🙂

So I went there and have more info.

First off it ended up being him not having the monitor cable hooked into the GPU but instead to the mobo, which I didn't even think to check for like 30 minutes so that's kind of on both of us, and was the major problem. But that only took down the 'it will crash the computer in under 5 minutes of playing' to 'possibly after 10 minutes.'

I couldn't get into the BIOS to check anything but that's a different problem I believe and wouldn't help here maybe.

I did also set steam to run it with "-dx9" in the launch options and that let it run for longer than 10 minutes which was the longest we had. We tried TF2 also to see if it was all games or just DOTA 2 but TF2 was also preset to use DX9 so that might have been why it didn't crash. Is also on borderless windowed mode and lowest settings, but those he can change on his own to make the game to his liking, would just change the FPS really for changing graphics. Didn't get to GPU or monitor drivers or anything unfortunately.

Problems now are that we still don't know if doing "-dx9" launch options worked long term but that's what I did last before I had to leave.

If anyone has any more ideas I'd be glad to hear them
