So I have a computer that I use for light gaming and also social media. While I'm gaming I want to be able to keep an eye on my discord chat, spotify and maybe facebook. I have a second monitor but I don't want to plug it into the same graphics card I use for gaming because it's just a little GT710 1gb and it doesn't cope very well in that scenario. I have a second pcie x16 slot so if I got a cheapo graphics card could I just plug that in and power the second display off that? I have a dell optiplex 790 fyi. I think I have an nvidia nvs300 lying around somewhere...

yes you should be able to just insert the gpu in the second slot and attach the monitore it will either work or it wont  if it doesent work you wont damage the parts so give it a try just make sure you power supply has a big enought wattage  to run 2 cards

why? Using more outputs of the same card wont hurt performance because displaying a desktop or browser screen wont use any compute power.

Yeah that'll work.

CPU might have a slight performance hit since it's commanding two GPUs and not just one.

If you want a better card, GTX 700s should be fairly low now. Maybe like a 750 Ti or a 760.
