Intel vs AMD manufacturing
3 hours ago, sample text said:can't understand 1 thing:I'm reading a PC book atm and the author said around 80% of the PCs in the world are using Intel mobos, chipsets, chips,CPUs,because manufacturers like ASUS,MSI,Foxconn,Gigabyte..all of them use Intel's chipsets.Basically Intel control all chipsets/motherboards in the world(except AMD),but why AMD isn't that "popular" or let's say AMD isn't that world wide, compared to Intel? Both ASUS or MSI produce Intel and AMD parts, but why is Intel always more popular? Is it just the people's choices to buy Intel, instead of AMD or the manufacturers produce more Intel parts?
Intel has had an aggressive marketing strategy in the past, allowing them to get more exposure and thus a larger customer base. Intel is basically a household name when it comes to computers. If you ask random Joe if they know what AMD is, they might not be able to give a decent answer if they know who they are at all. The average person doesn't really care about the intricacies of what powers their computers. They just see a brand their familiar with and go with that.
The other part of it is that AMD started sliding after Intel released the Core 2 processors. They remained afloat but they couldn't quite match Intel. Then in 2011 they had a huge blunder with Bulldozer. It took them five years after that to finally come out with something that competes with Intel.
So the first problem is in the consumer space, AMD is basically an unknown. Sure enthusiasts know who they are, but enthusiasts account for a tiny portion of consumer PC users. The second problem is in the enterprise space, AMD hasn't been a compelling option, though it's looking like that's changing with EPYC.
