Using external drives for gaming?

hi all,

 

so i'm in the market for a new gaming pc. however, some of the pcs at my price point only come with a 500gb or so ssd hard drive. my concern is that with the large size of more recent games, i will only be able to hold a handful of games at any one time on my internal hard drive. so i was wondering if it would be possible to load games on an external hard drive and still run them efficiently? i've looked into this a little bit and from what i can tell there might be some slower loading times, but i dont fully understand how much slower as i couldn't find any exact information. i also found conflicting information regarding any performance issues this may cause

 

i was hoping anyone who has tried this themselves could share their experience. what sort of issues did you run into?

Why not just install a 2nd bigger internal hardrive

You can usually have more than one internal hard drive, unless you're running a laptop with only one slot. It's a common gaming solution to have one small SSD for your Operating System, apps, and maybe some games depending on SSD size/amount you want to spend, and then also have a larger capacity hard drive for the rest of your games & other data.
