Well define expensive?  I think a Dell XPS 9560 would be perfect with the 9570 coming out soon, prices should trend even more downwards.  The quadcore processor, the ability to have 32GB, 1TB options and even a 2.5" bay if you take the 56 watt battery, great battery with you go FHD screen and 97 watt battery, full SD card reader, full USB ports.  You could find one used under $1000 depending on specs, probably a new one will be $1200.  

 

I am probably selling my 9560 i7, FHD, 97 watt, 16GB, 512GB GTX 1050 if my mom doesn't want it and probably will be asking $900-$1000

Nothing decent in that price range, maybe Acer Aspire 5. Used Thinkpad like T430 and T520 would be a better choice.
