Hello all,

 

I currently have a Haswell-E PC that has been re-deployed as a server for my home lab. It used to be a primary PC hence why some of the parts don't make perfect sense for a server.

 

It uses an i7 5820k and a Gigabyte X99 Gaming G1 WIFI motherboard.

Now my question is in regard to maximum RAM capacity. I am considering expanding to 128gb.

 

Intel's above page for the processor states it tops out at 64gb maximum RAM. 

However Gigabytes page states that it supports up to 128gb RAM.

I am aware the x99 chipset also supports Broadwell-E CPU's which Intel lists as supporting 128gb RAM. 

The part that throws me off though is the memory guide provided by Gigabyte. This lists for Haswell-E processors, 8 x 16gb (128gb total) as a configuration that is supported.

So before I go and drop over $1k on RAM, I want to know if 128gb would work. 

Has anyone had any experience in successfully using more than 64gb of RAM on a Haswell-E processor?

Any help would be appreciated.

Honestly, i dont think it is a good idea to spend that much on ram. Stick to 64 if you have it. 

 

Can it do it? Yes, although it cannot handle high speed ram all that well.

Per both the Manual & the QVL, it will take 16 Gb x 8 memory modules (though getting 3000 on 8 sticks could be rough). So, from the information on their website, it should work, though do you really need 128 Gb?

 

The speed doesn't bother me too much. Was planning on 2666 anyway.

The server is running ESXI and running several VM's all the time. I plan on running a couple pretty demanding VM's for testing purposes as well that will require at least 48gb of RAM minimum for one of them. While the most demanding VM's won't be on all the time, the regular full time load will normally sit very close to the 64gb mark. I may make do with 96gb of RAM. Still working out exact specs.

Okay, so you do have a use, then, which is why I asked. 

 

And I don't know it'll work, but the listing points to it most likely working with a recent BIOS update.
