1. Budget & Location

$700 and US

2. Aim

Mainly going to be gaming currently he mainly only plays LoL but he wants to play SC II: Heart of the Swarm and mainly only Steam games

3. Monitors

Currently he only has one monitor and I think hes going to stick with it and it's a 1080p monitor.

4. Peripherals

Windows will be needed.

The reason for upgrading is that his current rig is one of those 2005 Dells with no room for expansion.

My recommendation:

$700.37 off various sites, slightly more off newegg only

Should be enough for those games, given they aren't too demanding overall.

There's no reason to go for 1866 MHz memories. And is the DVD writer really necessary? I haven't had one for two years and I've been fine.

While I'd agree about 1866mhz memory, it just happened to be the cheapest heatsinked 8GB kit. :P

As for DVD drives, I think it's more of personal preference. I personally don't have one in my rig either, but it's definitely useful for those who may still use dvd's and such from time to time. It's just a thing I include by default in a rig, but the OP is definitely free to remove it if he doesn't need it.

The build is good but if you don't mind spending a bit over, adding a 64gb boot ssd will really improve day to day performance
